Difficulty: Moderate with a couple big climbs and a sometimes-muddy spot. For a shorter walk, just return the way you originally came.
Supplies Needed: Cool Dog would love to see a picture of your cool or cute dog to keep in his cool doggie album in the letterbox- he likes to make new friends. If you don’t have a dog, bring a cool or cute sticker of a dog and of course your own rubber stamp (dog related preferred but you may bring any kind you like!) and your own journal. A compass would help too but is not totally necessary.
Cool Cat is Cool Dog’s New Neighbor - bring a cat photo or stamp when you visit this box. This is not a hitchiker box, please leave it next to the Cool Dog Box even if Cool Dog begs you to take it!
Cool Dog likes to do lots of things. Travel in space, skateboard, tackle the waves, play ball, and of course sniff his friends. To see what Cool Dog is up to follow the white tail, I mean, white trail. To get to the white trail follow these clues.
While Cool Dog is practicing his slamma jamma he spots a tennis ball behind the tennis courts and races to retrieve it. Bonus! He spots a squirrel - must chase!!! He chases it past part of a fence, turns left when he reaches a marshy area but loses the scent after he crosses the bridge.
He sniffs to the left, fish! He follows a gravel trail that comes to a pond where he gets a drink of water. He sees some kids skimming rocks on the water. He does not feel like getting his fur wet, so he leaves the fish alone and continues past the pond bearing left over a small bridge.
He then comes to a big gravel road and turns to the right. When he spots a yellow blaze on the left he sees the squirrel again and chases it onto the yellow trail. The squirrel scurries up a tree, waving his tail and scolding Cool Dog with his “Tsk Tsk” sound. Stupid squirrel! No matter, Cool Dog is onto a scent of something else interesting.
He sees a bench on the right, (blue trail) where the trail divides but he decides to follow the scent onto the yellow, bearing left. Wahoo, he finds a rocking rock! He rocks a bit and continues on.
He keeps watch of the yellow blazes and follows them up to the left up a small hill.
At the yellow blaze on the skinny tree on his right, he paces 45 doggie steps, and enters right into the woods onto a white disk blazed trail.
Rrrufffff, this hill is tough! He is a strong dog who does not complain because he is one cool dog! He climbs up to where there is lots of ledge and interesting spots to sniff.
Hmmm, which tree to sniff? These two with white blazes are kind of close together; Cool Dog sniffs the first one then turns to the north, his ears flapping in the breeze. Off the trail he goes and up a bit until he finds a most unusual tree lying down. It looks dead, but wait, there are trees growing up to sky off of the dead tree.
Under this tree Cool Dog finds a little spot in the ledge perfect for a small animal to hide or for a small animal to hide something. In fact it looks like he has been followed by an animal who also wants to hide here. Oh well, the more the merrier. Here you will find his letterbox and Cool Cat’s letterbox.
There is a nice big rock to sit on and stamp and enjoy a bone or snack.
After you are done, return back to the white trail.
Longer Hike: Go up on the white trail. Continue on white then turn left when you reach the orange trail and when you reach the end of orange, turn right onto yellow. Follow yellow all the way to the end and admire the view before you descend down into Crandall 2 parking lot. Go thru the gate back onto the big gravel road and look for the small trail on the right, which brings you back the way you came. (Over the small bridge, past the pond, onto the gravel, over the bridge and in-between the tennis and baseball fields back to Crandall 1 Parking Lot) Cool Dog did smell some rotten eggs, a penguin and a parrot on other trails in these woods, but he will have to explore those letterboxes another day, he is now a Hot Dog and needs a cool drink of water! Ruffff! “Thanks for Visiting and Stay Cool!”
Shorter Hike: After finding the letterbox, Return to the white trail and go back down, returning the way you came. (Down the he white trail, left onto yellow, stay on yellow and turn right when you return to the main gravel road, look for the little path on the left and cross the small bridge, by the pond, over the marsh bridge, past the tennis courts and back to the parking lot.)
