UPDATE: 3/7/05 ~ We have had reports that this box may not have "weathered" well. We won't get a chance to get to Tahoe anytime soon, so please keep us updated through email on its status. We do have a local contact if something needs to be taken care of.
On the SE side of Lake Tahoe is a place called Zephyr Cove. It is a nice day-use beach area (there are also restaurants, cabins to rent, paddle boats and Steamboat rides).
In Aug of 2004 my family had a day at the Lake as part of the Barlow Family Reunion that was held in Carson City Nevada. We created this stamp and this box for the grandchildren that were at the beach that day to introduce them and their families to Letterboxing and get them excited to try some on their own.
Clues:
When you pull into the parking area there will be a Toll booth ($7 - we were able to go in at dusk without paying or maybe you can walk in if you don’t want to spend the $ or the day there). After the Toll booth turn left and drive all the way to the end of the parking area until you see the turn about. Park your car. Then find the big Triangle rock between some of the parking stalls. Behind the rock follow the stepping stones toward the cabins until you come to twin trees. Beside the twin trees is a rock, a stump and a bush. At the stump turn and face the Lake. Walk straight towards the lake (you may spy a garbage can if it stays in the same spot) until you come to a path along the fence. Turn left and follow the path and fence line almost to the end (you’ll pass a picnic table and two more garbage cans). As you come near to the end of the path you should spy a group of 5 trees on your left in a formation that resembles the roll of a 5 on a die. Behind the group of trees is a fallen log and two boulders. Behind the log and between the boulders is your prize hidden under a pyramid of rocks. We hope you enjoy the stamp and the Lake! Happy hunting!
(PS. We have no idea how the box will fair in the snow, so if you go in the winter-time, let us know if it needs help.)
