PLEASE GET THE CLUES FOR PLAYBILL SERIES #1 - CATS, AND PLAYBILL SERIES #2 - PHANTOM OF THE OPERA FROM THEIR INDIVIDUAL LISTINGS.

Playbill Series #1 (Cats) and #2 (Phantom of the Opera)

Clues: easy
Terrain: mostly moderate, but some parts rocky and steep
Time: the short way, about 50 minutes to an hour/the long way, about 2.5-3 hours.
First find: 9/2/2004

Clues:

From the monument in the center of Lenox, take Rt. 183 South for 1.5 miles (you will pass Tanglewood on your left) to a fork. Take the right fork (Lenox Road) for another 1.4 miles. On your left is a parking lot for Yokun Ridge Reservation.

Before you head off on your search, walk to the center of the rock wall, read about Olivia's Overlook, and enjoy the view for a minute.

Cross the street and head into the woods on the trail. Follow the trail for about 5 minutes and you will reach a clearing with a donation/trail map box (with no trail maps, alas). Standing in front of the box, look up and slightly to the right for trail signs.

Playbill Series # 1 - Cats:
Take the right hand trail marked Burbank Trail to Monk's Pond (heading east/100 degrees). Walk about 10 minutes until you cross a little dry creek bed. Just past the creek bed, look ahead to see three trees on the path. Two are on the right of the path, and one is on the left. The tree on the left has a red spot painted on it about 6 feet up from the ground.

Walk to the tree with the red spot. Turn to the left and face N/NE at 50 degrees. You will see a rock about 12-15 feet in front of you. Walk to the rock (about 10 steps). The box is hidden at the base of the tree to the right of the rock on the side farthest from the path.

Playbill Series # 2 - Phanton of the Opera:
After you find Cats, you can take the short route (about 15 minutes) to Phantom, or a longer, more challenging but more interesting route (about 2 hours).

Short route: Retrace your steps back to the donation box. Take the trail marked Burbank Trail to Overlook. It's the center path, and the only one that heads uphill (sorry!). Walk for about 5 minutes until you come to a clearing. Walk under the power lines, and look for a path on your left. (Skip the "Long Route" paragraph and continue.)

Long route: Continue on the path after finding Cats. You will pass Monk's Pond on your right (very picturesque). Keep the pond on your right as you walk -- this branch of the trail is called the Monk's Pond Trail. Continue until Monk's Pond Trail runs into Burbank Trail again, and turn left. Follow Burbank Trail, watching for a little path to the right. Make a side trip down the right path a short ways and be rewarded with a plaque telling you about Burbank and a wonderful view. Return to Burbank Trail and turn right to continue. You will eventually come to a clearing at the power lines (it's a long walk!). Just before the power lines, look for a path on your right.

Down the path you will see a little stone pyramid structure (and a breathtaking view!). Walk to the stone pyramid. Turn slightly to your right and look for a tree just in the woods at 320 degrees. Walk down the path about 8 steps, turn right, and walk to the tree you spotted in the woods. It is the first tree you will come to. Between that tree and the one right behind it is a rock. The box is tucked into a space beneath the rock.

To leave, return to the Burbank Trail, turn right, and return to the donation box. Stand with your back to the donation box, and the trail back to Olivia's Overlook is the one right in front of you.

After stamping, please rehide the boxes as well or better than you found them. And send us an e-mail to let us know you found them.
