This is the second of five series honoring the first five seasons of the Summit Players' Shakespeare in the State Parks program. There are two boxes in each of the five series. Additionally, there is one more box honoring the first Executive Director of the company.
The Summit Players are a traveling, non-profit theatre company. They are the only one in the country which tours a Shakespeare production to multiple state parks each summer, presenting a show and education programs completely free to audiences. For more info about the Summit Players Theatre check out their website, https://www.summitplayerstheatre.com/
1. High Top
Being a seven member theatre company requires the players to be cast in multiple roles in each production. Each role is identified by one or two easily worn costume pieces (a vest, a crown, a sash, etc.) that can be switched out quickly. This requires that the players all wear an identical base costume over which these items can be worn. The Summit Players base costume has always consisted of a black t-shirt, jeans, and a pair Converse All-Stars (or generic look-alike) usually of the High Top variety.
To find the "High Top," you need to go to the Evergreen parking lot and start at the trail map on the east end of the parking lot. Get on the green trail going southeast (turn right when standing in the parking lot) towards Summerstage. Pass the entrance to Summerstage and keep going east up the gently inclined, grassy trail. You will pass a light pole marked "E3" on your left and the trail will bend right and go in a southerly direction. Walk to the very next light pole on the right. It will have black, green, and blue trail markers on it and is identified as ND6 on a box on the base of the pole away from the trail. From pole ND6 walk back the way you came (head north) for 27 steps. You will see a large mossy rock on the left just off the trail. Behind it you will see a V-shaped tree about 5 steps off the trail. The "High Top" can found at the base of the tree away from the trail in the middle of small pile of rocks. Please re-hide the box well when you are done stamping in. Please return the way that you came or continue on the green trail loop for a nice 2 mile walk. Be sure to stop and take a look around the Summerstage theatre area and come back later to see one of their fantastic shows.
You will need a pink inking pen for this stamp.
2. As You Like It
The second season (2016) of Summit Players Theatre saw the company remounting their production from the first season and adding on a completely new production of As You Like It. This play is a hilarious forest adventure full of disguises, shepherds, jesters, banished royalty, and even lion attacks! In this play, the lovesick Orlando professes his passion for Rosalind by hanging sappy poems in the trees of the forest of Arden.
To find one of Orlando's sappy poems, you need to go to the Tower parking lot. From the lot walk up the steps to the Observation Tower. Behind the tower, you will see a large rock with brass plaque indicating that the peak was named in honor of "Increase A. Lapham, Eminent Scientist and Useful Citizen." Follow the stairs on the left of the plaque onto the Ice Age Trail. At the bottom of the stairs is a four way intersection and a bench. Continue straight through the intersection. This will keep you on the Ice Age Trail which is marked with yellow blazes along the way. About two-tenths of a mile from the stairs you come to another intersection with the blue trail and another bench. Sit on the center of the bench and look straight ahead. You will see a very large V-shaped tree. Take a compass bearing of 80 degrees and you will see a another tree that leans to the right as it goes up. This tree will be about halfway between you and the very large V-shaped tree. You will find the "As You Like It" stamp hidden in a hollow in the base of this tree. It will be covered by rocks and branches. If there are any of Orlando's sappy poems still in the box, please take one as a memento from this box. It is very important to completely re-hide this box (including rocks and branches) well after stamping in as it can be easily seen from both trails. Retrace your steps back up the Ice Age Trail to the parking lot. Be prepared for an invigorating uphill climb. Once back at the Observation Tower, take the opportunity to climb to the top. It affords excellent views of I-94, Delafield, Holy Hill, and several large local lakes.
You will need brown and green inking pens for this stamp.
