Dudley Porter was a prominent Businessman in Haverhill, Massachusetts. He was: shoe manufacturer, banker, library trustee and park commissioner. He died in 1905. It is said on the day of his funeral that City Hall offices and public schools were closed. In 1906 Mrs. Dudley Porter gave the fountain in honor of her husband. The area surrounding Kenoza Lake (previously called Great Pond) has been enjoyed since early times. The citizens came to fish, picnic, swim, and boat before Kenoza Lake became a resource for drinking water for the city. One can imagine seeing people arrive in their horse and buggies for a day of pleasure.

Make your way to Kenoza Avenue in Haverhill.
Drive between the Winnekenni stone gateway, park on the left. Look for the flagpole nearby and follow the walking trail that runs beside the street. Take the first right at the fork which runs between Kenoza Lake and the basin. You will come to a three way split, follow the left and continue on the Bridal path. Walk till you come upon a large granite bench. Find "Dudley Porter". Facing the Porter bench, go to the right side. Walk up the right side of the water run-off and look for a large dead log about 30 steps away. Here you will find Dudley sleeping in his hiding place. This park can sometimes be busy, so please use discretion and hide the box where you found it.

To make your return you may go forward on the same path and take the first right turn. This is Castle Lane and takes you up the hill to Winnekenni Castle. If you have time check out "Return of the Wapiti" letterbox on the grounds.
From the castle follow the road back to the parking lot at the bottom of the hill. You may also retrace your steps and return the way you came. This quest takes about an hour but 30 minutes longer going up to the castle and back down to the parking area. Enjoy this lovely area.

checking the box on 5/19/2009 I found it missing but put a replacement box. Will crave another stamp asap.
