Distance/Terrain: Short walk on dirt/rock trail. 15-30 minutes round trip.
Santa works hard getting ready for Christmas and then he spends roughly 24 hours delivering presents all around the world. So he is more than ready for a break on December 26 (known as Boxing Day to Brits and letterboxers). He is also ready for a change of climate from the North Pole. In 2022 he decided to spend his day off in the USA. However much of the country was in the midst of a deep freeze, with blizzards to boot. Even Florida was cold! So he opted to spend the day in Arizona.
He had heard that Superior, AZ was a trail town, so he figured it would be a good place for a hard working guy to kick back and chill out. If all those AZT through-hikers could take a “Zero Day’ here, so could he! He headed to the trailhead for the most prominent point in the area, one that the AZT passed right through. He noticed that there was a spot for horses and trailers and figured reindeers and sleighs would fit right in.
After getting the whole gang settled, including Rudolf, he hit the trail just north of the Site Host. He ambled along, since he was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf, and proud of himself. He crossed a wide wash, then a narrower one as he continued on. Now dash away! Dash away! Dash away all! he muttered to himself as the trail curved left and then made a U-turn.
He soon spotted a 3-arm saguaro on his left. His eyes -- how they twinkled! His dimples, how merry! His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry! His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow, and the beard of his chin was as white as the snow.
He climbed up behind the cactus, then opened the bundle of beer he had flung on his back, and he looked like a hiker just opening his pack. He had a broad face and a little round belly, that shook when he laughed like a bowlful of jelly. But I heard him exclaim, ere he took his first swig, CHEERS TO ALL, AND LET’S ALL DANCE A JIG! But it wasn’t long ‘til he had taken off his cap, and just settled down for a long winter's nap.
If you hunt for this box, we'd appreciate an email message to let us know how Santa is doing. Thanks!
