Monte Sano State Park is located, near Huntsville, in northeast Alabama. In Spanish, Monte Sano means “Mountain of Health.” In the late 1800s, visitors from across the United States came for “the season” to experience and enjoy Monte Sano’s fresh air, spectacular views and mineral springs.
Today in the park they have many activities that bring people to the park. Hiking and Biking trails, Camping and Cabins, History and fun new activities abound. On your visit to the park you will need to pay an entrance fee and you may want to stop by the camp store and pick up a map before you head to the over look parking lot.

Drive out by the CCC Museum, to the overlook parking lot for some great views. Take a short walk down the North Plateau Trail, toward the South, As you go down this trail you will come to a very large tree on your left with a very big opening at it's base. Now start back to the parking lot, but stop at the very next big tree on the right, that is just past a side trail. Look at the base of this large tree, that does not have a big opening, at its base.

Now on back to your car.
