April 9, 2005 was the inaugural year for Ironman Arizona in Tempe. It was also my husband's first Ironman. After crossing the finish line, it was evident that he was addicted to the sport of triathlons. If you are not familiar with an Iron distance triathlon, it includes a 2.4 mile swim, followed by a 112 mile bike, followed by a full marathon ( 26.2 miles) and must be completed within 17 hours. See www.ironmanarizona for more details!
After a year of serious training, we went back to Tempe for this year's Ironman Arizona and while there, I planted this letterbox in honor of my husband's hard work and dedication to the sport. It is planted along the running route of the race.
Clues: The letterbox is located near Tempe Town Lake. You can get to it from either Priest Street or Mill Ave. The letterbox is on the north side of the lake ( the side closest to the freeway). From Priest street, walk along the running path until you reach the 12th light post on the trail. To the left of the light post, near the fence line you should see a really tall, silver metal utility pole with the number nineteen spray painted on it. Ironman Arizona is a camo microbox and resides at the base on the backside of the pole, under some rocks.
Please let me know of the status of the box as we are not from the area and the box is an orphan!
