I caught my second trout in the Heritage Trout Challenge, a Goose Lake Redband Trout. We were camped at Stough (Stowe) Reservior Campground and though you might enjoy the Cedar Creek Interpretive Trail too. Go east from Alturas on highway 299 toward Cedarville, after the top of the pass watch for signs for the Upper Cedar Creek Interpretive Trail and the Cedar Pass Ski area. Go south of the hwy, 0.6 miles to the parking area. The Interpretive Trail has two ends, an upper and a lower. It easiest way to enjoy the trail is to have two vehicles, so you can go one way and have some method to recover your first vehicle from the other end. The box is located nearer to the upper parking lot. The whole trail is about 3 miles, but just to the box and back is about 1/2 mile. Starting at the upper end, follow the trail, stopping to enjoy each of the interpretive sites. After you finish at marker number 4, go seven paces due north of the marker, just before the edge of the stream bed where you can hear the babbling of the brook, look for a cluster of 5 rocks.
