EC Manning Provincial Park is a gorgeous, wild park in the heart of the Cascade Mountains, about 3 hours’ drive from Vancouver. It is a fun-filled destination with extraordinary hiking through forest and alpine meadows, canoeing along pristine mountain lakes, extensive mountain biking, and horseback riding in the summer, and exquisite skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, and sledding and tubing in the winter. Check out www.manningpark.com for info about the resort and the whole park, and www.env.gov.bc.ca/bcparks/explore/parkpgs/ecmanning/manning.pdf for a map of the park, including trails.

To get to this letterbox, take BC’s Crowsnest Highway (Hwy #3) and exit at Manning Park Lodge. On the east end of the main road and parking area past the lodge and the restaurant, follow the signs and road to Lightning Lakes Campground (NOT the Lightning Lakes Day Use Area). It is about a 5-minute drive from the lodge. After you turn left into the campground from the road, follow the signs to Spruce Bay Beach on the right. Park in the parking lot at the end of this road - note that there is a fee to park. Head towards the trail map posted at the edge of the parking lot and head left, over a small wooden bridge. At the intersection immediately on the other side of the bridge, take the gravel trail heading right into the forest instead of the paved path continuing up towards the amphitheatre. As you walk along this forest trail, you’ll pass a small trail heading left to the amphitheatre – don’t take this trail. Keep going straight until you hit a larger gravel road up ahead. Go right down towards Spruce Bay Beach. Walk past all the picnic tables on your left and continue to follow the path as it curves right, away from the beach. A minute or so along this road, there is a large, cracked, decaying, fallen log on the ground on your right, immediately next to the path. Look under the log on the side away from the path, in the spot where the log is cracked and bent. There is a large piece of decaying wood and several smaller pieces of wood that you need to remove to find this letterbox. Please be discrete and hide it well when you return in. Also, this box is an orphan so if it needs a bit of TLC your help will be much appreciated! :) And if you make it out here in winter, can you let me know if you can still access this box? Not sure whether you can drive into this campground area or walk out to the beach here in the snow!

It’s a 5 to 10-minute walk to this spot from the Spruce Bay Beach parking lot, or you can stop along the way as part of longer hikes along the Skyline or Lighting Lake trails.
