This box is such a short walk it could almost be considered a drive by.
It is located at the Union Mills Mills Homestead Park, just 7 miles north of Westminster, MD on Route 97. Address is 3311 Littlestown Pike, Westminster, MD, 21158.
Park on the parking lot behind the Blacksmith Building. Walk up the road to the signs in front of the gift house. Read about the Gettysburg Campaign and how those horrific Gettysburg battles almost happened in Union Mills. Read of the Defiance at Union Mills. Then turn to face the Mill and the waterwheel.
Stroll across the road to admire the waterwheel. (You can buy fresh stoneground flours inside!) Walk down the blacktop road away from the waterwheel and toward the Tannery Building, following the white picket fence. Turn right to cross the millrace on the pretty white walking bridge. Walk up the incline toward the root cellar door on the back corner of the Shriver Homestead house. Stop at the root cellar door. The prize you seek is under the bush and ivy to the right of the root cellar door.
You can sit on the stones and stone benches to stamp, just a few feet away beside the goldfish pond. This place can be very crowded, or a place of solitude, depending on the day, so please be discreet. Seal well and hide well before leaving.
I hope you have an opportunity to enjoy this lovely location, a favorite of mine!
