Eagle Lake Marina Series
Lassen County, CA

Eagle Lake is the 2nd largest freshwater lake in California that is natural and wholly in the Golden State. The lake is 5,100 feet above sea level. The lakes surface area fluctuates and it is currently at 29,000 acres.

Eagle Lake was once home to many volcanoes and is rich in volcanic rock. The eastern side of the Cascade Mountains border Eagle Lake. The western sides are extinct volcanoes.

This lake is home to many birds: Pelicans, Western & Eared Grebes, Seagulls, Robins, Osprey, Canadian Geese, Wood Ducks, and many other native birds. It’s also well known for Eagle Lake Trout. Eagle Lake Trout can only survive in highly alkaline waters.

Once nearly extinct, Eagle Lake Trout have made a come back with the help of California Department of Fish & Game. On slow days in the jetty area, it’s not uncommon to see huge schools of trout swimming close to the rocky shore. This is also a favorite area of the bird population.

Find Gallatin Marina at Eagle Lake. Park near the large propane tank on the far side.

To find the box:

Enter the trail where the sign with a bicycle is posted. Take the path on your immediate right. Pass the large rocks with orange lichen.

Take a seat on the bench and take in the view. This is a very peaceful place that is slightly secluded. It’s a great spot for fishing.

Turn around. Take about 15 man steps behind the bench. Wedged between two large boulders that are next to a small pine, is what you are looking for. The box is covered by a smaller, but HEAVY rock.

Box #1 keeps coming up missing. So it is now retired.
