This area got flooded recently and this box got washed away. It won't be replanted but look for another tribute to Burle Ives in the future.

History:

Burle Icle Ivanhoe Ives was born in eastern Jasper County in Hunt City, Illinois on June 14, 1909. He attended Newton Community High School before attending Eastern Illinois University in Charleston. Mr. Ives died on April 14, 1995 and is buried in Mound Cemetery near Hunt City. The bridge over the Embarrass River as you enter Newton now bears his name.

Clues:

Sam Parr State Park is located on Rt. 33 near Newton. You can obtain a park map at the park office at the entrance to the park. The box is hidden on the east side of the park. Take the first road east of the park (1400E) and head north for ¼ mile. Turn left on a paved road. If you go over the bridge over the lake, you’ve passed the road. Park in the lot. Enter the trail at the grassy opening between the field and woods, SW of the parking lot. Follow the trail to the right. At the large cedar the trail goes left into the woods area. This isn’t a really well defined trail but you can tell where it goes. Soon the trail curves toward the lake. Around the lake area, you’ll come upon a large downed tree parallel to the trail. The area where the downed tree is right next to a living tree is where the box can be found under some leaves and sticks. Once stamped in, return to the parking lot the way you came.

Happy Hunting
