There is a state park just north of Venice. The original 462 acres were donated to the state of Florida in 1955 by Elsa Scherer Burrows in memory of her father, an inventor who developed a process for dyeing leather for shoes in 1872. In 1991 another 922 acres were purchased as part of Florida's Preservation 2000 initiative.

Start at the beginning of the Yellow "A" trail near the rest area on Lake Osprey. Walk through all the bends till you come near the blue trail. Careful because there are many places if you do not follow others' footprints you'll get lost.

From the trail proceed at 300 degrees past 2 pines. From the trail post it is 30 steps. Turn left off the trail, over 2 rotten pine logs and up into a grove of scrub pines.

On the right is a nasty one with lots of miserable spiked limbs. Go up to bench and make entries. Please recover with leaves and palm branches.

April 2008: The Manager for Oscar Scherer State Park writes to say the area has changed. The Yellow Trail has been re-routed to accomodate Sarasota County's new Legacy Trail. In addition, the pine tress may have been cut down as part of their scrub restoration program.
