I and my two kids braved the terrifying winds of Tropical Storm Ernesto. The kids were off from school due to fears of high winds and flooding. We were terrified as we drove through the sustained 5 mph winds with gust up to 10 mph to plant this box. We held onto our umbrellas in white knuckled terror as the light misting of rain came down upon us in all of mother nature's fury. Those of you that were in central Florida realize that this is a joke. We really didn't get much effect from the storm.

Description:
Three main trail loops take visitors through this 400-acre preserve of scrub, pine forest and scattered wetlands. The scrub is a remnant of an ancient sand dune ridge that once extended from Ocala to Lake Wales. Active management here seeks to restore this scrub habitat, which is home to more than 200 types of plants and animals.

It is open during daylight hours. Please stop by the library to pick up the trail guide, animal checklist and plant checklists. The library also contains an environmental collection consisting of books, video tapes and reference materials created by Volusia County Environmental Management Services. These materials provide information about the flora and fauna of Florida, especially the scrub habitat the library is built on -- the Lyonia Preserve at Section 16.

CLUE:
All dirt path! Wear appropriate shoes!
Walk down behind library into Preserve entrance. Note entrance pole with 3 colored arrow markers. You will be following the yellow, or Scrub Plum, marker.

Second pole with markers is just after picnic area and heads into Preserve. Continue up the dirt path.
At third pole with markers turn left and continue until you come to wooden bench.

Stand next to bench and walk 10 woman size steps behind it. Look to right at "person size", somewhat round scrub bush. It's a bit larger than the surrounding scrub plants. Box is behind and below the bush. Thanks for rehiding it as this is a rather sparse area.

If you'd like a longer walk you can continue around the circle. The Scrub Plum trail is .4 mile. There are 2 other trails much longer which have a map at entrance and at the second marker.
