800 Year Old Giant
What is the largest and oldest living thing you will ever see? Some of these venerable giants reside in Cathedral Grove of MacMillan Provincial Park east of Port Alberni on HWY 4. You can park on either side of the road, the oldest giant lives on the south side of the road but the letterbox is hidden by some giants on the north side of the the road. Be very careful if you cross this busy highway! From the parking lot on the north side of HWY 4 walk into the woods turning left (west) on the boardwalk and then down a winding path heading north. Stay on main trail heading northward. You will pass several intrepretative signs (Indian Pipe, Root Rot) and will finally come to a clearing and a sign about the "Tree of Life". Walk off the trail past the sign to the back of the quiet and trusting giants on your left, about 11 steps. There you will see a hole in one of the giants, about knee height, with a small log in it. Remove the log to reveal the box and replace both carefully of course! Give this giant a little pat before you leave.
