Shanti's Letterbox (Ink Provided)

Please leave Shanti a note if you can!

This is an EASY box to find; perfect for kids.

This box is in Cleveland Park, Washington, D.C. on the Melvin Hazen trail which runs west from Rock Creek Park. The box is hidden on the far western part of the trail, between Connecticut Avenue and Reno Road, and (south-north) between Rodman Street and Segwick/Upton Street.

There are two entrances to this part of the trail.

(1) Start from Connecticut Avenue between Segwick and Rodman. The trailhead is at the back of the parking lot of the Segwick Gardens Apartment complex, 3725 Connecticut Avenue (do not park there -- there is ample parking on Segwick and Rodman streets up the hill a bit).

From the trailhead take the trail west about .3 miles. The beginning part is a little down and up and down but then you will be on a section at the bottom of the ravine. Depending on the time of year, you will see Reno Road. Around here the trail will start to ascend, right before this there is a V. At the bottom of the V is a tree on the right that has carved into it "Dora & Jesus." From this point if you look right you can see a cute little pond with a tiny waterfall. At this point turn around 180 degrees. Walk back along the same trail you came on east, back towards Connecticut Avenue. You will walk between the neat cuts of fallen tree on each side of the trail. You will also pass a old tipped over tree on the left where you can see the roots. After that you will come to another tree that was once neatly cut on each side of the path. It is now very old and covered with ivy. From that tree walk about 35-40 paces. On your right you will see a big tree just to the right of the trail with octopus like roots. The box is hidden among the roots of this tree.

(2) Starting from Reno Road:

You start from this end of the trail on Reno Road, at the corner of Rodman or at the Corner of Tilden and Reno. Both places have ample street parking. Either way you will head down hill and the box is about .10 of a mile away. If you come from the Tilden side you will pass a small pond and waterfall on your left. Right after this the two trails join at a V with the bottom of the V pointing east, towards Connecticut Avenue. If you come from the Rodman Side look to your left for the other trail and the pond/waterfall beyond that. At the bottom of the V is a is a tree on the left that has carved into it "Dora Jesus." Continue on the trail east towards Connecticut Avenue. You will walk between the neat cuts of fallen tree that on each side of the trail.
