This is a tour of a historic cemetery in downtown Franklin, at the interesection of Rt. 140 and Union St. Take 495 to the 140 exit, and head East toward Franklin for about a mile. The cemetery entrance is on your right. Park where you want, but your search will start by the locked gate on the Union Street side. Bring a good compass with degree markings.

You may find it creepy or disrespectful to be "playing around" at such a place. However, gaining a little appreciation for local history, and also for the remarkably varied old stones, your visit is clearly a societal plus. After you finish the search, I encourage you to take a further tour of the older section (look for slate stones).

You will visit twelve gravestones, and each will provide one letter of the alphabet. These will spell out your final destination. My paces are somewhat long for a person who is 5'10".

Facing the Union Street gate from within the cemetery, go to the third stone on your left, which faces the stone wall. Record the first initial.

Go five more stones in the same direction, record the second (surname) initial.

From here go 250* (asterisk = degrees) for 15 paces. Record the deacon's wife's first initial.

Go 345* for 28 paces and find Asa's wife. Record the first letter of the month of death.

Go 310* for 10 paces, and record Anne's husband's first initial.

Go 300* for 10 paces, record Lois' husband's last initial.

Go 20* for 27 paces, record the fallen lady's 1st initial.

Go 270* for 23 paces, record the last letter on this most unusual puddingstone marker.

Go 240* for 39 paces, record the founder's second initial.

Go 0* (360*) for 43 paces, record Edmund's last initial.

Go 290* for 22 paces, record "your honor's" first initial.

Go 10* for 19 paces, record Nelson's last initial.

You no doubt guessed the word some time ago, and the target is nearby and in sight. Go to it, at the northwest "corner", towards Joe Hutchinson. The box is under low branches, under a flat piece of concrete. Please leave the box/jar vertical.

Hike length: 0.1 miles
