Spring Pond Letterbox Directions

Time to walk: About 20-25 minutes. A few minor jumps involved, and one fairly steep hill. To get extra points, bring a plastic grocery bag, and pick up some litter left by careless fishermen. Bring plenty of bug spray if you are heading out during the summer months!

On Washington St. in Franklin, MA, the section between Union St. and King St., drive until you see the stainless crescent. Southwest of the stainless crescent, across the street, is an area to park your car.

Leaving your car, walk inside the guardrail heading NNE, until you come to a fire hydrant. The path goes down a little hill to the left. This area can be muddy when the water is high. (If it is really high, you can walk up the road, and go left into the auto body parking lot, then heading straight back, leading towards the dike.) Follow the path, which stays roughly along the water’s edge, where it meets up with a dike running to the left. Follow this dike. At one point, you’ll reach a flume, and you’ll have to step/jump across an opening about 2.5 feet.

Continue following the path, which bends away from the pond. You’ll come to a clearing with a fire pit. At this point, go left – you’ll pass through some old logs that were cut to clear the path. The path then goes roughly straight until it comes to an inlet of the pond. Here, follow the water’s edge, then go up a fairly steep hill, stepping on roots and rocks for best traction. At the top of the hill, go left, following the path out to the end of the point. Enjoy the view.

Reverse direction, and take the path towards the left, following the water’s edge. You will reach an ugly fence, put up by a misguided person who sought to keep geese from going from the pond over to the corporate park nearby. He forgot geese can fly. Follow along the fence, and follow the path as it curves around some, but stays mostly near the water. You will come to a clearing. At the far end of the clearing, a point of land runs toward the middle of the pond. To get there, you’ll need to jump down onto some pallets to cross to the point. Go to the end of the point, enjoy the view, and retrace your steps. On your left heading back, there is a triple-trunk tree. Behind this tree, by the base, is your goal.

To complete your circumnavigation of the pond, go back to the clearing, and find the path leading back to the road. At the road, you can walk back to your car inside the guardrail.

I have a new letterbox called "Happy Squirrel" about 1/4 mile away up Washington, towards King Street. Perhaps less pretty, but more interesting.
