Walk: Easy to moderate
Distance: 1 mile
Dogs on leash okay

Box missing as of 3/29/08. It will be replaced soon.

This box was named in honor of the Outdoor Camping training that is held for Girl Scout leaders in the Joshua Tree Council twice a year at this park. Part of the training includes a night hike up to this area.

The box is located within William S. Hart Park in Newhall, CA. Enter through the Santa Clarita Historical Society gate and park in front of the old train station.

Walk down the dirt road to your right. If you have time, see the historical buildings on your right. The road will lead down to campsites. Follow the road all the way down to campsite 7. Keep right when the road splits. Just before you reach the outhouses, there will be a trail going uphill on your right. Observe the gates locked sign!

Follow the trail to the top of the hill. When you get to the private residence at the top, stand with your back to the pole of the chain link fence that is on the right side of the gate (do not enter the private property!) Set your compass to 20 degrees and follow the trail. Keep to the right as you follow this trail. You will see two benches. Take a look at the incredible view of the Santa Clarita Valley. Continue past the two benches. There will be two paths. Take the one leading uphill. You will come to another bench. Continue on the trail towards the water tower.

There will be a small trail leading to your left before you reach the water tower. Here are the ruins of a gazeebo from the days that William S. Hart lived here. Walk through the opening into the runins and straight to the back wall. Peering over the low wall, slightly to your left is a fallen support beam made of rock and cement. Under this beam, toward the left, is the letterbox. You should be able to reach it standing on the cement pad. Be aware of rattlesnakes when reaching for the box. You may want to shine a flashlight into this area first! Please do not climb over the wall and destroy the plants.

When you are done, you can continue down the larger road to the mansion or return the way you came.
