“Making Tracks West” is the third in a series of four boxes. It is hidden at the Prairie Park Nature Center in Lawrence. The paths are open even if the center is closed--but it would pay to visit this place during nature center hours. “Forest Wonder”, is also hidden in this park.

To reach Prairie Park Nature Center at 2730 SW Harper:
--Go to Lawrence and get on K-10 / 23 Street.
--From K-10 / 23 Street, turn south on Haskell.
--From Haskell, turn east/left on 27 Street.
--From 27 Street turn south/right on Harper.
--Enter the parking lot on the west side of the nature center and park in the south lot.

To find “Making Tracks West”:
--Walk south from the parking lot to the beginning of the trail. The sign at that spot will indicate that St. Mary’s Lake is 3/8 mile away.

--Walk west/southwest toward the lake, as indicated by the arrow.

--Veer to the left just past the Japanese Honeysuckle marker (1/4 mile to the lake).

--Pass by the 1/8 mile marker for the lake.

--Note the Virginia Creeper marker on the left and continue about 12 more steps.

--Turn west/right and take the upward trail which begins with three wooden steps.

--Walk up the hill, following the path about 35-40 steps.

--Off the path, about 10-15 feet to the southwest/left, there is a tree which snapped off its base and is suspended in the branches of two other trees. Go to that tree.

--Walk west another 7-8 steps to another dead and falling tree.

Do you see tracks on the ground around this tree? Look on the west side, under twigs and bark and you will find the box. Can you identify these tracks? Do you know WHO GOES THERE?

Please cover the box up well when you are through. I’d love to receive a status report on the box. Thanks!

IF YOU GO INSIDE THE NATURE CENTER, YOU CAN STAMP THE LIFE-SIZE TRACKS OF THIS LOVELY CREATURE AND MANY OTHERS. IT’S WORTH THE TIME!
