This letterbox is no longer there, it's dead. I will try to get another in a new location at this site with new directions. asap Sorry.
The Gardener
The northern city limit of Leavenworth is defined by Metropolitan Street. It runs from the Centennial Bridge over the Missouri River, (which defines the eastern border of town), to the city limit to the west. From the bridge, going west on Metropolitan you will pass the water plant, the Army Reserve Station, the entrance to Fort Leavenworth, and the formidable United States Pennitentary, all on your right. Stay on Metropolitan till you get to the Santa Fe Trail (formerly old 73 hwy, also known as County 14). Turn right, and right again at the first opportunity. This enters the viewing area to see the small herd of Buffalo which lives on USP grounds and gives an unrestricted view of the prison.
In the drive behind the viewing stand is a small island with two small trees on either side of a large granite boulder, placed in memory of Buffalo Bill Cody. He spent his boyhood years in the Salt Creek Valley just north of town up till he was old enough to join the Pony Express.
Under the center of the UNengraved side of the boulder you will find the letterbox, covered with a few handfulls of rock.
Please remove and stamp away from the hiding site and return VERY discreetly, as this is a highly traveled area. Be sure to cover completely when returning so that it won't be disturbed by the many visitors to the sight.
NOTES: See how many buffalo you can spot and be sure to listen to the kiosk while you're there! Hungry? Try the local hot spots: The Metropolitan Family Restaurant at 16th and Metropolitan, The Town Pub at 10th and Ottawa (a family pub and eating establishment), or the NU Way on Shawnee St. between 5th and 6th St.s downtown. Spend the day, there are 7 letterboxes in the area!
