RETIRED

Driving Directions: From Rt. 3 in Exeter go west on Rt. 165 2.8 miles to a white church on right. Turn right onto Frosty Hollow Rd. Go 1 ½ miles to T, go right. Drive ½ mile to Breakheart Pond parking area.

This is a hunting area so mandatory florescent orange required October through end of February. Observe all local & posted regulations. Take proper precautions against disease carrying ticks and poison ivy.

Clues:

CLUES WERE MODIFIED ON 11/14/06 TO CUT OUT A PORTION OF THE TRAIL THAT WAS DIFFICULT TO FOLLOW. BOXES ARE STILL IN THEIR ORIGINAL SPOTS.

Hike is approx. 3 miles. Pay attention to directions in the clues as there are a lot of unmarked side trails making it easy to get lost if you do not know the area. Each stamp was designed to be a certain color. Please use the ink pads provided for each stamp. When an ink pad is damaged contact me and I will replace it. Good luck & happy hunting.

From parking area walk back down road to dam and fish ladder. Turn left over wooden bridge to begin your counterclockwise walk around the pond. Past the red gate, at Y take left on yellow walking past the sign for the Breakheart trail. About 50 feet past a wooden bridge you will see a low stone wall on the right. From the wall walk about 15 steps along the trail. There will be a large rock on right side of trail. You should see a rotten tree stump at 140 degrees on the back side of the wall. Walk to stump but do not cross wall. If you are facing the stump standing up against the wall, your first lucky charm should be right next to your right hand in the wall. If you remove the center of the three rocks hiding the box you should be able to reach in and retrieve your prize. Your first lucky charm is the “Yellow Moon” and is said to have magical lucky powers. The log book in this box is for all the lucky charms. The remaining six boxes are mini boxes and have no log books.

Continue back on trail. After a few minutes you will see a low N-S running stone wall on right side of trail running parallel to trail. Walk slowly along the trail looking right until you see a large tree with hollow base and yellow blaze on side of trail. Walk just past this Keebler elf factory tree then turn right and walk off the trail between the tree and another low stone wall for 6 steps. Low in stone wall (on your left) is the “Green Clover.” The four leaf clover is my favorite lucky charm. When I was little I used to search through clover for the elusive four leaf clover. I never found one. See how lucky you are already!

Back down the trail until you come to a T. Go right on trail at 60 degrees (ignoring the side trail in front of you) Over a fallen log. From log go 30 steps to a group of rocks on left. Low behind the closest large rock is the “Orange Star.” Make a wish on the star.

Retrace your steps back over fallen log to intersection. Continue straight on yellow passing the trail you just came up on your left. After wooden bridge follow yellow to the right. The trail goes along a stream. Soon you will pass through a stone wall. The path will start to swing away from the river. When you see a low stone wall on the left coming towards the trail at an angle stand directly facing the wall. You will be looking down the wall at an angle of 170 degrees. You should be able to see a rotten tree across the top of the wall. Walk down left side of the wall to the rotten tree. The “Purple Horseshoe” is under a pile of rocks on the top of the wall just before the tree. You only need to move the center rock to get to box. Make sure you stamp open side of horseshoe up otherwise all the luck will run out of the horseshoe.

Continue down the trail. Immediately you will come to a 4 way intersection with yellow going straight. You will go left. As soon as you turn left you will see a Y. Remember this spot you will come back here shortly. The path to the left might be overgrown so you may not see it very well. Go to the right. The trail crosses double stone walls that look like they once were a farm lane. Continue on trail until you come to a single stone wall crossing trail. Do not go through wall. Turn to left and take 18 steps to a large pine tree. The “Pink Heart” is exactly 2 steps from the tree at 340 degrees under a single flat rock low at bottom of wall.

Once stamped in turn around and go back through the double stone walls to the Y (looks like a T from this direction.) Turn right. Follow the trail to a small clearing and a 4 way intersection. Turn right. Walk 130 steps and look on the right for a large pine that looks like it sitting on top of the wall growing out of the rocks (the wall has heaved up as the tree grew.) It is the only pine tree that looks like this and is easy to spot from the trail. When you find the tree, cross the wall to walk to the right side of the tree. Standing with your back to the tree, the “Blue Diamond” is 2 steps down the wall.

After you find the box, turn around and go back to 4 way intersection. Go right.

Soon you will be able to catch glimpses of the pond through the trees. At an unmarked dead-end side trail on right walk 15 steps up side trail to see a cellar hole up on your left. On your right are the remnants of a square block stone wall. Walk 15 steps to end of this wall and find the “Red Balloons” under the left side of the last rock. A big thanks to Music Woman who carved the Red Balloons for me. Continue back on main trail to complete your circuit around the pond and back to your car.
