We have learned by sad experience that the first Greenough Park letterbox is usually not accessible in the winter, because its hiding place usually gets covered with thick ice and snow. The first box also disappeared once, but has since been replaced. The second box is usually accessible year round.

These letterboxes are located in Greenough Park in Missoula, MT. If you know where that is, you can skip ahead. If not, here are the directions to the park itself.

Obviously, you will need to get yourself to Missoula, MT. If you are coming in from the Bitterroot Valley on MT Highway 12, the easiest way to get across town is to take Reserve Street to I-90 and head east. Once you are on I-90, you will be looking for the Van Buren Street exit. If you are traveling east, you will need to take a left at the stop sign onto Van Buren Street. If you are west bound, you will need to take a right at the stop sign.

Whew! Now that you’re thoroughly confused, let’s proceed shall we! Anyway, once you are on Van Buren, you will need to count three streets to Locust Street and take a left. Continue on Locust until you reach the point where you must turn right or left where you will take a right. Continue up Monroe for approx. 0.4 mi. until you see the brown and yellow “Greenough Park” sign in the second parking lot. Park your car in the lot.

Proceed to the entrance of the park with the large rock in the middle of it. You will want to stand facing the rock with your back to the parking lot. As you look over the rock you will see a large brown trash can and a large green picnic pavilion. If you look between the trash can and the pavilion, you will see a bridge in the distance. Go to the bridge.

Once you cross the bridge, turn left and follow the trail that parallels the creek for approximately 43 paces. On your left you will see the remains of a concrete structure and a large, round, iron well head. The first box or the “A River Runs Through It” box is down in the hole next to the iron pipe, tucked up in tight around behind the pipe. This is a very popular park and a somewhat visible location. Please, try to be as discreet as possible while finding and replacing the box.

To find the second box or “The Three Wisemen” box, continue on the same path that you were on before. Continue on that path until you emerge in a meadow with the trail right along the river. Once you have reached the meadow, return to the point where the trail emerges from the trees and backtrack approximately 50 paces. As you backtrack, be looking for the large tree trunks that have fallen and have a section cut out of them to clear the trail. When you reach 50 paces you should also have counted 4 trees that were cut to clear the trail. When you reach the fourth tree trunk, look to your right. You will see three ragged, broken off tree stumps. The box is hidden in the middle (also the shortest) of the tree trunks. The top of the middle stump is hollow, and the box is hidden under some bark and other debris.

Sorry the clues aren’t more creative, but creativity takes time, and time is what we have the least of right now! Please, let us know if you find the box through the letterbox.org site. If you find any problems with either of the boxes, let us know that too!
