MISSING! Sorry to say, after many years and a couple of hundred finds, this one has finally bit the dust. We plan to replant it sometime in 2010 after we RETIRE!!

Difficulty: Drive by

Road trips are a gas! We hadn't been on one since before our kids were born (22 years ago). We started in Davis, CA and drove to where our hearts took us for 2 weeks, a total of 4,222. Looking for a good idea for a place to see fireworks we found out Mt. Rushmore was shotting them off on the 3rd of July and we were only a couple hundred miles away. Can you imagine a better place to view 4th of July fireworks than with Mt. Rushmore as a backdrop? That's what we and about a bazillion other people thought! We found out the fireworks would be shot off on July 3rd this year and we scrambled to get there early in the day to get a hotel room in the nearest town. Keystone, SD is a town which has to be the most obnoxious, tourist trap in the nation!! (Think "Back to the Future II" when the town has gone bad.) Speakers blaring the coming attractions of the gunfight in the middle of the road, migrane-inducing LED signs flashing "low rates" and "Kids eat free" everywhere. Outrageous!

We got to within 2 miles of the entrance to Mt. Rushmore and were greeted by dozens of troopers carrying rifles, inspecting cars and moter homes for the safety of us all. "Parking is right there in front of you for Mt. Rushmore and it's a 2-mile hike to the entrance," the officer said. Well, phooey on that, we thought, our enthusiasm deflated, and we chose to go to Custer State Park instead via Rt Alt. 16, aka. the Iron Mountain Road. Imagine our delight when we discovered that you could pull over at several spots on this road and see the famous Mount from there! This is a beautiful and interesting road and we highly recommend it!

Clues: From Keystone take 16A toward Custer State Park. Go through 2 narrow tunnels and a couple of "pigtails." Park at Norbeck Overlook. Take the trail to the pay binoculars and see Rushmore for (almost)FREE!! Turn around and, instead of going back to the parking lot, take the right fork, following the metal railing. At the end of the railing, count 30 steps (south) then head off the pavement up to the top of the ridge between 2 big outcroppings. At the top, go south 14 steps to the backside of this outcropping. You will see a vertical crack in the rocks. The box is behind some smaller rocks tucked into this crack a few feet off the ground.

Discresion is important. There were a LOT of people in this area even though it was off the trail.

Note: We satisfied our 'monumental' craveing by traveling to the Crazy Horse Monument about 10 miles as the crow flies from this letterbox. It was a great site with LOTS to see and do. Highly recommended!!
