Seattle REI Flagship Letterbox 222 Yale Ave N Seattle, WA 98109 Driving directions and other fun stuff: http://www.rei.com/stores/seattle/index.html This letterbox is available only during store hours: M-F: 10 am - 9 PM Saturday: 10 am - 7 PM Sunday: 10 am - 7 PM Children friendly Easy walking with some stairs Alive and well as of April 1, 2005 In 1938, mountain climbers Lloyd and Mary Anderson joined with 23 fellow Northwest climbers to found Recreational Equipment, Incorporated (REI). The group structured REI as a consumer cooperative to purchase high-quality ice axes and climbing equipment from Europe because such gear could not be purchased locally. The business evolved from selling ice axes from their home attic to the many stores of today. The Seattle Flagship store is a fun place to visit if you're in town. I've placed this box with the permission of REI. So stop by, take a climb on the pinnacle, stroll through the store and have a bit of fun looking for this letterbox. Before you enter the store, you will see a series of large Swiss Army watches on the deck outside. Start at the Lava Falls, Colorado River (located in the Grand Canyon, Arizona, USA) timepiece. Follow the rest of the clocks: The North Face of Eiger elevation 3,970 meters Jungfrau Region Swiss Alps Denali elevation 6,194 meters Alaska, USA Mt. Everest elevation 8,848 meters Everest time differs by 45 minutes from the world clock Mt. Rainier elevation 4,392 meters Washington, USA Great Barrier Reef Queensland, Australia Coral Sea Mt. Kilimanjaro elevation 5,895 meters Tanzania, East Africa Vinson Massif 5,140 meters Ellsworth Mountains, Antarctica China Bowl Vail Mountain Vail, Colorado, USA From this last timepiece, you can get a great view of the huge climbing pinnacle that sits inside the front of the store. Now stand exactly half way between the Mt. Kilimarnjaro and Vinson Massif clocks. Head 141 degrees to a sidewalk. (All readings are based on true North. The magnetic declination for this area is 21 degrees. So if you subtract 21 degrees from 141 you will get a magnetic reading of 120 degrees, but you already knew that, right?) Head 281 degrees to the street corner. Look for "To Store Entrance" sign post. Go through metal gate and walk to a bridge to see the waterfall. Retrace steps to find a signpost that says, "Hikers Only." (Watch out where the Hiker trail intersects the Bicycle Testing trail.) Go down some steps. Take the middle path and look for a gravel path to the right. On the left in the bushes will be a sign "Interpretive Plant Trail." It's a bit hard to see through the foliage. Keep your eyes peeled for small posts in the plants that give their Latin and common names. First up on the right is Cornus "Eddie's White Wonder" or Western Dogwood. Go down 4 steps. Look for Rosa nukana - Nootka Rose. Go down another 11 steps. Head 271 degrees. On the left will be Rosa pisfera - Pea Rose. As you walk, look for the following plants: Tolmiea menziesii - Piggy Back Plant Aruncus sylvester - Sylvan Goats Beard Camass quamash - Indian Hyacinth Holodiscus discolor - Ocean Spray Trillium ovatum - Trillium Rhododendron malrophyllum - Western Rhododendron Viola glabella - Johnny Jump Up Ribes sanguineum -Flowering Currant Vaccinium parvifolium - Red Huckleberry (Yummy!) Throughout your walk will be salal and Oregon grape, which are two of my favorite plants in the underbrush of the great Pacific Northwest. In your travels through the trails there is a post that states "This tree was planted to honor the partnership between Subaru and the National Forrest Foundation to conserve our nation's forests. Planted November, 1997." After you've found this sign, take a seat. Reach behind and to your right to the letterbox hidden in the rock cove. Please be very careful finding and re-hiding this letterbox. It is in a public location with high walkby traffic. I hope you enjoy your visit to one of my favorite stores. This is my sixth planted letterbox. Please email me with any questions or comments at Keegan62002@yahoo.com.
