Distance: 1.2 miles roundtrip
Terrain: Level, forested dirt trail
A pair of sleuths stealthily made their way to the Cape Cod of the Midwest, beckoned by some local farmers. Their mission? Solve the case of the Chicken Murders. This was a case they took to heart, uh, I mean gizzard. Their own origins were based on a beheading. The saying “running around like a chicken without its head” in reality evolved to just the gizzards creeping around. But they had honed their detecting skills over the years and were very motivated to solve this case.
The farmers reported that they lost several of their prized chickens to some type of killer in mid-June. They set a live trap and caught a murdering mink. Being kind hearted, they released the moonlight marauder many miles away. But alas! A few mornings later there was more carnage, even after they had made the coop more secure. The desolate farmers had gone from 38 hens to 11 in a matter of days. The trap was empty, so they hired the Creeping Gizzards to track down the villain.
To follow the Gizzards on their hunt, park at the pullout on Skyline Road that overlooks Nicolet Bay. You can read about an aquatic species on an informative sign.
Walk about a quarter mile east along the road until you reach the intersection with Lone Pine Trail. This is where our unusual detectives took the trail south. Continue on the trail south until you reach a “Lone Pine / Nicolet Bay” trail sign. Turn around and take 34 steps back to a 3-4 foot stump on the left with a fallen tree beside it. The Gizzards are in the crook of the short arm on the left of the fallen one, near a small pine (about 8 steps from the stump).
Unfortunately the detectives still haven’t apprehended the malicious slaughterer. Perhaps it has slunk back to the nearby Mink River since Mama Farmer had threatened to make it into a mink scarf!
Retrace your steps to your car or continue on to explore more trails and take a longer loop back.
Please let us know if you were successful in finding these stealthy sleuths.
