This is the year of the delayed DEEP Sky's the Limit challenge. This year the challenge focus is “Paths Less Traveled”. Above All State Park is a little park with a short, slightly overgrown trail. We seldom see other people here and on one visit we did have to wait for two bears to get off the trail so we could get back to the car.

Above All was the location of a civil war era observation tower which later burned. It became a state park in 1927. Part of the land came from the Above All farm which the owner claimed to be the highest elevation working farm in Connecticut. In June 1957 the park became a cold war era unmanned radar installation. The site included the radar equipment, a tower and a building housing the generator. In 1968 another building was added but the Air Defense System was no longer operational.

The trail in is very short but there are some land trust trails nearby if you want more walking.

To find the letterbox walk up to the building. Walk around the outside of the chain link fence. On the north side find the oak tree that has become one with the fence. Standing with your back to the tree walk about 5 steps to a pair of oak trees with a rock between them. The rock marks the spot. Please hide well.

REVISED 5/12/2021 ***** Many thanks to cooledcoyote for letting me know that the structures have been removed. This letterbox was fine and I have moved it slightly. As an aside the area is undisturbed around all the other boxes in the area except the one that was closest to the building. To reach the new location go to the three parallel concrete blocks. Sit on the left one facing the woods and look down the tractor path toward the largest pine tree. This is a compass reading of 30 degrees. Walk to the pine and watch out for detritus on the way. A few feet behind the pine is a bush clump with a rock in it covering the box.

Hike length: 0.5 miles
