Wisconsin Farmers Union (WFU) is a member-driven organization that is committed to enhancing the quality of life for family farmers and rural communities through educational opportunities, cooperative endeavors, and civic engagement. WFU works closely with its members to educate adults and youth. A significant outreach of the youth education program is Farmers Union Camp at WFU Kamp Kenwood; it offers overnight sessions that focus on cooperatives, family farms, sustainability, leadership, conservation, rural communities, social justice, and active citizenship.

Cooperative education has been an integral part of our youth education programming since the 1930s. Campers learn about the structure, types, sectors, and principles of cooperatives. Cooperatives are organizations that are owned by their members, who elect their members onto the board of directors. The board has the power to appoint the manager. Both the board and manager listen to the needs of the members. The manager hires workers who can, in some cases, also be members of the co-op.

The different types of cooperatives indicate the members who have the power within the organization. There are six main types of co-ops: consumer, producer, worker, purchasing, housing, and multi-stakeholder. The sectors of cooperatives tell us what the organization does in a distinct area of our lives/community such as agriculture, grocery, financial, utility, and more! Cooperatives are guided by seven principles which inform both their business structure and their community engagement. Follow this link to learn more about cooperatives and the seven principles. https://ncbaclusa.coop/resources/what-is-a-co-op/.

Co-op principles and structures are put into practice by campers establishing their very own camp co-op store for their camp session. On the last day of camp, campers close out the business after paying expenses and distributing each member’s dividend. Campers then donate any remaining surplus to a community organization or long-term camp project of their choosing.

An internationally recognized symbol of cooperatives is the Twin Pines image. The two pine trees standing side-by-side represent cooperation and endurance. The tree trucks are continued into roots which form a circle around the trees, signifying the sustainability and inclusiveness of cooperatives.

Part 1
As summer staff for Wisconsin Farmers Union, college students divide their time between Farmers Union camps at WFU Kamp Kenwood and outreach events around the state including dairy breakfasts, Wisconsin Farm Technology Days, the Midwest Renewable Energy Association Energy Fair, and the Northern Wisconsin State Fair. While on the road, we also take time for a midsummer retreat which typically includes camping at Rock Island State Park. On our way back from the park, we make several sightseeing stops in Door County, with Cave Point County Park being one of our favorite places. We enjoy swimming there, so if you’d like, bring a swimsuit along!

You will need to visit the Wisconsin Farmers Union website to find information to solve the clues. https://www.wisconsinfarmersunion.com/history-mission

After gathering the information from the website, you are now ready to begin searching for the box at Cave Point County Park. As you start, be aware of poison ivy along the trail.

From the brown Welcome to Cave Point County Park sign, take an “A” degree compass reading and follow the path to the open area along the cliffs. There is a dramatic u-shaped cliff; the area is popular with sightseers, swimmers, and kayakers. If you feel compelled to join in, you can take time now or later to swim.

After checking out the cliff area, follow the cliff shoreline trail going southwest. You will pass a gazebo on your right-hand side. Continue walking along the trail. Eventually you will see a yellow state sign (you are entering Whitefish Dunes State Park). Continue to walk about a 1/”B” mile, and you will see a faint footpath heading to the right. Standing on the faint footpath between two young trees (with the maple on your left), take a compass reading of “C” degrees and walk “D” steps. You will come to a low exposed rock outcropping. Climb to the top of the outcropping. Take a compass reading of “E” degrees. In this direction, you will see a pile of wood. Check under the wood in the rock crevice to find the box. Please securely close and re-hide the box well when finished.

Now that you know about cooperatives – keep an eye out for co-ops in Door County and at home! The electrical grid on Washington Island is supplied by Washington Island Electric Co-op. Another example is Door County Cooperative; headquartered in Sturgeon Bay and founded by farmers in 1939, it provides farmers and consumers with a variety of goods and services.

Co-ops can also be found around the world. Examples of co-ops that provide products in grocery stores include Organic Valley, Ocean Spray, Sun-Maid, Blue Diamond, Land O’Lakes, and Equal Exchange. In addition to buying co-op products, you can also shop at co-ops including REI Co-op, ACE Hardware (a co-op owned by local hardware store owners), and local food co-ops.

Good luck and have fun shopping cooperatively!
