A nice loop walk through the piney woods on the west side of Schoolhouse Pond

When we first saw the cute log logbook then goes along with the two stamps in this series carved by Spoiled Rotten of Ohio, we immediately thought of one of our early plants called “Nurse Log”, which also happened to be one of my early carves that I actually liked: a nurse log with little pines and mushrooms growing on it, just like the log itself had back then. We thought we’d like to plant this new series in the same general area, but couldn’t remember where exactly that was, since we hadn’t rechecked it since 2011. So, we checked our website for the clue, only to find it listed simply as “bonus” from another box, with no other clue saved!

We guessed which box it was probably “bonus” from, but in the ensuing 18 years or so since that box had been planted, we couldn’t even find the landmark for the high burl that was one of the largest we had ever seen, so much had the woods changed with blowdowns and a whole new forest of small dog hair pines in an area that had once been fairly clear. So much for finding the box with the bonus clue, we could barely even find the old nurse log itself, covered as it was now with another blowdown that took us about half an hour just to clear away to make the log visible!

Anyway, the trail itself is still in good shape, just an example of how much things do change over the years and of the need to replenish areas with new boxes once old ones have gone missing or become unfindable. Towards that end, we hope to be able to provide a few replacements here and there, but mostly would like to encourage others to plant in areas where our boxes used to be so that letterboxing can continue there for many years after we’re gone.

Anyway, for this particular letterbox series update, park in the dirt lot sign for Schoolhouse Pond on the east side of Kings Factory Road in Charlestown, RI. Continue up the dirt road east following blue blazes for about 5-10 minutes to see the pond. Turn right through the boulder row, still with the blue blazes, and pass a boat launch spot on your left. Bear right into the woods away from the pond. At a sharp right with a white diamond on the tree ahead, turn right and take about 15-20 steps to see cut logs on both sides of the trail. Look about two feet in on the north side of the first (longer) log on the left to find “Airmail” with its log logbook in a medium black pouch. We’re asking that you please write something in the logbook - the old-fashioned way - rather than just online, in case we can ever get it planted back in Ohio. We also wanted to let newer letterboxers know that for many years before AQ even existed, this used to be the only way people would know who had visited any particular letterbox, and is still the only way we play!

Now continue through the woods until you reach a blow down area with a long log paralleling the left side of the trail just after it. Behind that long log is the original “Nurse Log”, now without mushrooms, but with its tiny inch seedlings grown up to several feet. Look behind its left corner for “Snail Mail” in a small black pouch. (If you reach a large four-trunk candelabra tree off trail right, you have gone about 120-130 steps too far.) Close the loop and turn left on the dirt road you came in on to get back to your car. Hope you had a nice little adventure!
