I had my dog with me when I was scoping out the location to hide this letterbox one evening. He was afraid and would not follow me into the dark area where this letterbox is hidden.

Make your way to the Durham Library next to the Green in Durham, CT. To the east of the front door is a plaque dedicating this garden in remembrance. East of the plaque is a Japanese Maple (many trunks diverge from the initial trunk). To the south of this tree is a big brownstone rock that reads Durham Public Library. Head north from the Japanese maple along the library until you find the old Durham Library that was built in 1901. Notice the date and the library name is carved out of brownstone. You may want to feel the brownstone portion of the building to get a feeling for its sandy surface. Walk up the steps to the front door of the old library. Count the number of steps up. Go down the same number on the other side. Then walk around to the front of this building that is over 116 years old and find stairs that lead down to a darker area. Go down the same number of steps you went up (or down before). Look up and find the letterbox on the rusty steel rafter. You may be able to better reach the letterbox if you go back up 2 or 3 steps.

This stamp in this letterbox was the first stamp my daughter carved when she was only ~10 years old. She loves dogs and is very fond of her puppy named Lucky.

Did you notice the sandy surface of the Brownstone that was used for a portion of the old library? This brownstone is a type of sandstone that was quarried across the CT River in Portland. Brownstone was the fashionable building material of the time. The original Middletown Library (which is part of the current library) is built of brownstone. Many buildings in New York and Boston were built from the brownstone quarried in Portland. One of the brownstone quarries in Portland is now a water park with zip lines and other fun recreation so it is easy to find if you are curious.
