Worcester Mountain is near the end of the Worcester Range, part of the CC Putnam State Forest in central Vermont. This is a challenging hike, but the views are magnificent. Plan for five hours if you go the way we describe.

To get to the trailhead: from Vermont Route 12 north of Montpelier, turn onto Minister Brook Rd. (west side of Rt. 12). Go 1.5 miles and turn right onto Hampshire Hill Rd. After 2.3 miles, turn left onto a narrow lane (Mountain Rd.). Go 0.1 miles and turn right onto what looks like a driveway. There should be a sign here directing you to the parking area. Follow this drive to the parking area at the trailhead. (Be aware there are a couple of large dips in the drive along the way. Take extra caution if using a regular car so you don't lose anything off the bottom.)

Start at the trail sign and head into the woods. Cross a brook and come to a large Y. Take the right-hand trail. You will be following blue markers to the top, but there was a confusing mark at the next intersection. Stay straight and do not go right. The trail starts out gently, but after an hour begins to get challenging. Towards the top, the blue markers will be painted on the rocks so keep a lookout for them.

The top of Worcester Mountain is marked with a blue painted circle, and might have stones placed in it from triumphant hikers. Stand on this circle and sight 40*. Go down 12 feet in that direction and turn to face the rock. To your right, against the mountainside and under some rocks is the Worcester Mountain Box. Stamp in, climb back up, and enjoy the view!

The trail continues and becomes the Skyline Trail, and it is possible to get to the top of the mountain by using the Skyline Trail, which is listed as a moderate hike. However, all the trails to the Skyline Trail are listed as difficult or very difficult. If you have any questions about the hike, please contact us and we'll be happy to answer if we can.

Hike length: 3-5 miles
