Round Rock was named after the roundish rock that marked the low water crossing in Brushy Creek. The ‘round rock’ was a popular fishing spot of the town’s founders.

One of the feeder routes of the famous Chisholm Trail, this trail was popular as it provided adequate grazing and water as well as safer river crossings for the herd. This route was used during the cattle drives of 1867 to approximately 1879, before barbed wire ended the great cattle drives. As many as 40,000 cattle per drive were documented to be herded to the North for sale via the “round rock” feeder trail. Wagon ruts are still visible near the round rock in the creek bed to this day.

CLUES:

Driving: From IH35 take the Highway 79 AKA Taylor exit, heading magnetic East, stay in the right lane. Take a right turn at the first street light, which is Mays Street; again, stay in the right lane. Take the first right after the Methodist church onto Sunset Street. Follow Sunset Street almost back to the IH35 feeder road, looking for a street on your left called Summit Street. Park at the Round Rock Memorial Park lot near the picnic area.

Walking (< 1 mile total): Take the paved trail that follows Brushy Creek on the side with the picnic area and playground. Follow the trail under the IH35 bridge to the footbridge. Cross over Brushy Creek on the footbridge and head left on the paved trail. Look for the infamous "round rock" which is in the middle of the creek near the roadway which is Chisholm Trail Drive. Face the Round Rock historical marker that talks about the "loved old rock" and turn left and face the retaining wall. Go around the corner of the retaining wall. Move over 9 columns behind the first large willow tree with the shelf mushrooms on it. The letterbox is located on the second row from the ground.

Be careful to keep the location secret and well covered up by the rocks. ENJOY!!

WARNING!!

This is Texas and it is always possible to encounter snakes and scorpions under rocks. Use a branch or walking stick to overturn the stones.
