This letterbox - or observation point, as we call them - is part of the 2012 GO and Search the Galaxy! program, and is available from June 1, 2012 - August 19, 2012. Information about the program may be found at www.goyork.org. To participate in the full program, please pick up your free Star Guide (program guide) from any York County Library.
This letterbox is located in Richard M. Nixon County Park. It is 0.85 miles in distance and is rated "moderate" by GO York standards.
With your back to the upper parking lot head straight down the grassy lawn, staying near the pine trees on the left.
At the bottom of the hill, cross the bridge on the left. Stop, look and listen for frogs in the spring pond.
Continue on the trail and cross a second bridge heading up to the pond. Make sure to check the floating logs for basking animals.
Follow path alongside pond to the upper pond. Lay down on the bridge in between the ponds looking at the upper pond. What do you see?
Continue on path alongside pond towards the Bird Hollow sign.
Follow Bird Hollow trail to the right.
Cross over a third bridge. As you follow trail, count how many different types of mushrooms you can find. Or try carefully rolling over a log to see what is living underneath.
Continue to follow Bird Hollow trail. You will pass a set of stairs to the left just keep going.
Continue down a flight of 10 stairs. Stop, look, and listen to the natural waterfall.
Follow trail across a 4th bridge.
Locate post at spring house.
After post, retrace your steps back to the parking lot. Try walking in silence for a little while and listen to the forest sounds. What do you hear?
