Henry Morgan’s Treasure - This box is reportedly missing as of 8/09...
Avast ye lubbers! This is the tale of Mr. Farr’s 4th grade Young Scholars class in Scotia who spent a fair deal of time studying some blood thirsty pirates during the 2008 - 2009 school year.
One of the most vicious (and successful) of these scallywags was Captain Henry Morgan. It is believed that Henry Morgan was born in England in 1635 and spent most of his childhood years on the docks in Wales. It was there that he learned his love of the sea.
Morgan never considered himself a pirate. He said he was a privateer for the English - a captain who had the support of England as he plundered cities and other ships in the name of expanding English rule. As a privateer, Henry was obligated to give a portion of his (booty) to England. He often did not live up to this obligation.
One treasure that Morgan hid well can be found by following these clues:
Set yer compasses to the parking lot of the Sacandaga Elementary School in Scotia. This port is found on Schermerhorn St. From Sacandaga Ave., turn on to Seeley St. and take a right on Wren St. You will then go right on Schermerhorn St. and park in either the elementary or high school parking lots.
Once you have tied up yer vessel, look fer the place where the young bilge rats go to play and learn the ways of the pirates. You will see two red port holes that the gutter snipes like to play on - go there.
Once at the port holes, look around and get yer bearings. You should spy a gate on yer right that says “Hitchcock Field”. To yer north, you will find a large multi colored structure that makes an “X”. Go to this spot.
Once under the “X,” jump up and see how long you can hang by yer arms. This is good practice for punishments you might receive on the ship for stealing crusts of bread or breaking the pirate code.
You’ve got yer sea legs now, so it’s time to get that treasure. Start to head southeast “back toward yer ship”, and look for the double mainsails on yer right. You will need to climb between the two trunks and look for a port hole on the upper deck. In this hole lies yer treasure.
Hope you had fun learning about Henry Morgan and finding our treasure!
