5th at Molino

Unfortunately, bad weather closed the Catalina Highway on the day of the event, February 8,2009. The event was diverted to McDonald Park but our boxes are planted in the originally planned meeting place.

Welcome to the 5th annual gathering of the Tucson Letterboxers. In honor of our 5th anniversary, here are some fives to play with.

To find the box: This box is in the Coronado National Forest northeast of Tucson. Driving towards Tucson from the east on I-10, take exit 275 and go north on Houghton Rd. Turn right on Catalina Highway. Going towards Tucson from the north on I-10, take exit 256 and drive east on Grant Rd. Turn left on Tanque Verde Rd. Turn left on Catalina Highway. Driving up the highway and after passing mile post 5 turn left into the Molino Basin Campground. Drive all the way to the end of the campground road and park by the trailhead (If the campground is closed, you will have to walk up to the end of the road which is 0.7 miles one way).

Walk UP to the Molino Basin Trail. In a short distance you will arrive at a “T” junction – turn left. Walk for a while (10-15 minutes) until you arrive at a point on the trail where the Group Site (has restrooms, large ramada and a large fire circle) is directly below you. Just past this point, is a sharp hairpin left turn. Counting from the point of the hairpin turn go (11 times the "Anniversary Number") steps to a spot on the trail with a cluster of large boulders with a smaller rock nestled in them. Looking at the large boulders with its smaller buddy and face the Group Site, which is downhill from your position. Look down into the center of this cluster of boulders to find the box under some rocks.

All compass readings are magnetic north.

Please be aware this is rattlesnake country! Be very careful when walking and when reaching for the box.
