A recent newspaper article about neglected graveyards piqued our interest and we are in the process of seeking them out. This one was somewhat easy since it was on our map. However, the roads are not the best. I would suggest only going in good weather and using a 4 wheel drive vehicle. The road gets rougher the further in you go. We had to stop a couple of times to move fallen trees off the road and, although it was still October, there was a coating of snow on the trees. Despite all that it’s actually a very pretty ride, especially with the fall colors.

You’re headed for the Danbury Quarter Cemetery. From westbound Rt 44 you will pass through Winsted. After the intersection with Rt. 183 you want your first left on Ruggbrook Rd. Follow this around the reservoir for about 1 mile. The paved road continues but not for you. Turn right (the first you come to) onto Old Waterbury Turnpike. (The unpaved roads have names on our map but there were no signs.) Take your first right on Danbury Quarter Rd. (about 1.2 miles in). About .1 mile in there will be a road going off to the left and the remnants of a gate on your right. The cemetery is about a mile in on your left. There’s a small pull off. You can see it from the road so don’t despair.

The cemetery is not in very good shape and many of the stones are broken. There are a number of Revolutionary and Civil War soldiers buried here.

Clues: Head toward the Northwest corner of the cemetery and look for an alligator coming over the wall. There appears to be lots of ferns around here so I’m sure things will look different in the spring. Check in the alligator’s eye for the prize.

We didn’t explore further down the road so as far as we know you have to go back the way you came in.

11/10/08 - Trail Snail & Dragon Fly were first finders and they STRONGLY suggest that you turn around and go back the way you came. They tried it and the road ahead is eventually blocked and before that there's a very good chance you'll get really stuck.
