Colchester Reef Lighthouse

the box is currently missing, swept away during recent flooding. I will recarve and replant soon.

Colchester Reef Light was originally located about a mile offshore from Colchester Point on Lake Champlain. It was built in 1871 and operated until 1933 The original foundation for the lighthouse is still visible from the Colchester Causeway, a beautiful place to walk or bike and enjoy the lake and mountain views.

After parking your car at Airport Park on Colchester Point Rd or at the smaller lot on Mills Point Rd head out onto the causeway.

As you approach Law Island on your left, look out and you will see the lighthouse base with a small beacon rising out of the water. Continue on past the island, as you round the curve, you’ll see the bridge ahead. Watch for a large flat rock on the left with a long branch hanging overhead. (A great spot for a picnic or to watch a sunset.) Back a few feet and on the opposite side of the causeway is another flat white boulder with twin trees at the far end.
You will find the letterbox tucked beneath the boulder on the end by the path behind some smaller rocks.

This is a very busy recreational area, especially during the summer months so please rehide carefully so that it cannot be seen from the path above.

If you wish to visit the original lighthouse, just head for the Shelburne Museum.
