Watergate Picnic Area Letterbox
Delaware Water Gap--- New Jersey

****ATTENTION***Reported missing---will have to check on it to be sure---look for it at your own risk until we get a chance to find out what is wrong.

The Delaware Water Gap is on the border of New Jersey and Pennsylvania where the Delaware River traverses a large ridge of the Appalachian Mountains. A water gap is a geological feature where a river cuts through a mountain ridge.

From Interstate 80 westbound take NJ Exit 1 and bear right to a 3-minute light which controls one-way alternating traffic. From this point Watergate Picnic Area is approximately 11 miles north on a scenic winding route called Old Mine Road* with views of the river.

From Interstate 80 eastbound take the first exit ramp (unnumbered) after the toll plaza at the Delaware River (no toll eastbound) and at the end of the ramp, turn hard right. Pass under the highway to a 3-minute light which controls one-way alternating traffic. From this point Watergate Picnic Area is approximately 11 miles north on a scenic route called Old Mine Road* with views of the river.

*In the 1600s Dutch miners discovered copper ore in a beautiful ravine located a few miles north of the Delaware Water Gap. To access the ore and to transport it to Kingston, New York, they constructed a road, now known as the Old Mine Road.

Just before the hamlet of Millbrook lies the entrance to the Watergate area, acres of groomed grassy lawns on which to picnic, a pond or two, and clean public restrooms!
Entering the Watergate Picnic area, take the stairs to the right past the restroom building. Turn left and follow the lawn around the bend along side the pines. At the bottom of the hill you’ll meet up with Donkey Hollow Trail. Bear right at the fork past a small pond and follow the trail along Van Campen’s Brook. You’ll pass a larger Watergate fishing pond and an old access road on your left. Continue on Donkey Hollow Trail past rock piles on both sides of the trail and past another access road on the left. About 20 feet past the old pine grove you’ll hear the brook babbling. It is telling you to keep an eye out for the 2 “kissing boulders” to your left on the side of the path. In between these boulders you’ll find our Watergate letterbox! Please be sure to reseal baggies and boxes carefully so that they stay dry and rehide boxes in their original location, completely hidden from view.

If you keep going you can enjoy a stroll through the old Millbrook Village. Meander through this picturesque recreation of a 19th-century village along the Delaware River Water Gap National Recreation Area.

Wildlife: Nearly 250 bird species (waterfowl, raptors, songbirds, shore birds, game birds) inhabit or migrate through the park.
The park is one of the best places in the East to watch for hawks and other raptors during their semi-annual migrations. This is also one of the few locations where bald eagles spend the winter. Mid-morning or late-afternoon during January or February is the best time to spot them.
Also common are whitetail deer, beavers, black bears and river otters.
Plant Life: Hemlock, mountain laurel, black locust, rhododendron, and wild orchids are just a few samples of flora found in the area.
