Background:
Southeast Light, a beautiful red brick building with granite foundation and trim, is a national historic landmark built in 1875. By the early 1990s the lighthouse, originally positioned over 300 feet from the edge of the bluffs, sat a mere 55 feet from the edge due to the erosion of the 150-foot high sand and clay cliffs. In order to prevent the lighthouse from inevitably tumbling into the sea, the Block Island Southeast Lighthouse Foundation raised about 2 million dollars in federal and private funds, and in August of 1993 the 2,000-ton structure was hydraulically lifted and pushed along metal tracks on roll beams back to its present resting location, which geotechnical studies have determined will be safe for more than a century.

Directions:
Starting at the ferry terminal in Old Harbor, turn left out of the driveway and continue southeast on Water Street to Fountain Square and its lovely Statue of Rebecca, erected in 1896 and recast in 2001. Turn right onto High Street and a quick left up the hill onto Spring Street. Wind along Spring Street past the Spring House Hotel and enjoy the stunning views of the ocean, the flowers, the houses, everything!

Stay on the main road (Spring Street becomes Mohegan Trail), and as you near the crest of the hill 1.9 miles from Fountain Square, you’ll spy the top of the beacon’s 52-foot tower ahead of you on the left.

Clues:
Once you arrive at the entrance to Southeast Light, go through the gate and head down the path toward the lighthouse. Visit the small museum and shop, tour the building, walk to the site of the structure’s original location near edge of the bluff, and enjoy the ocean breeze. After you’ve had a look around, loop around the east side of the lighthouse until you reach the rear of the keeper’s quarters. With your back toward the structure, locate a line of large rocks leading away from the lighthouse. Starting with the rock closest to the lighthouse, count to rock number 6 and sit on it with your back to the brush and your face directly facing a telephone pole. From that position (sitting on rock # 6) reach down with your right hand. Nestled in an opening beneath rock #7, you will find the Southeast Lighthouse letterbox covered with a stone. Stamp in and rehide carefully, as this is a heavily traveled area.

The Southeast Lighthouse box was planted by Lea, Brian, and Jenn in honor of Larry Baldwin, who loved the sea.
