There are multiple starting points from along the HocHocking Adena bikepath, anywhere from Nelsonville 16 miles to Athens. However, your goal is between the zero point of the path and mile marker 1, so do the following:

Proceed to the Athens Recreation Center on East State Street. Park in their lot and lock your car. Find the bikepath along the river behind the center, and procede west, past the water treatment plant. Pass under the bridge of the Route 33 overpass.

NOTE: The bikepath is on the former railroad bed. This active bikepath proceeds 16 miles, further west past the Athens Recreation Center. The numbering of mile markers spreads in both directions from the rec center.

ALTERNATIVE DIRECTIONS FROM COOLVILLE ALONG Route 50 West:
[Watch for the exit to East State Street , 4 miles before Athens. The exit to East State Street business district is plainly marked. Take the exit and begin clocking three miles from that exit ramp.
Alternatively, you could stay on Rt. 50 and take the NEXT exit to the right and another immediate right to the Rec Center.
Alternatively, (and I like this best) you could turn left at the base of this Rt 33 ramp, and after passing under the expressway, make the first left possible (after the cannon) onto Home Street. Follow that south 3 blocks to the end and left into the Library parking lot.]

To find the LB: From either the Library Parking Lot, OR from the bikepath, watch for the blue sign with the stick figure of a person reading a book. The sign marks the paved walkway connector due north to Home Street and the library building. From the point where that cut-off leaves the bikepath between two benches, it is 100 paces toward the flag pole. You will arrive near a power pole or telephone pole short of the new library building. (It's the first line of telephone poles you come to. You'll know it's the right pole because running east and west is the dirt path that is all that remains of the raised railroad bed from years ago...and you can see it disappear under the expressway overpass to the east.)

Turn your back to the flag pole and your goal will be on your right hand. Hidden in the grapevine and shrubs is a stone or concrete pillar that formerly marked the corner of an estate. It has been abandoned for decades. The rest of the structure has crumbled away, and sags into a swampy depression. Stay out of the dip and on the bikepath side. Watch out for possible poison ivy, I am told! Find your way along the dirt path, and through the reed-like bushes to this tall pillar. At the base of the pillar where it meets the wall on the bikepath side, you will find the object you seek. The camo wrapped jar has been re-hidden.

Area children have been using this concrete wall & pilar as their private play fort. You may have to use some skill to find this 'box' in case they've moved it.

Watch for muggle traffic and be discrete. Please reseal the baggies and return all content back into the letter box, closing it for the next person, and carefully concealing.

If the logbook is full or if the LB is missing, please contact me to advise. Enjoy!
