Difficulty rating: Drive and Walk(easy walk) Suggest wearing heavy duty gloves.
Go north on 395 from Minden, Nevada until you get to the brown historical signs. Turn left and go west on 206, Genoa Lane.
From Carson City, Nevada go south on 395 until you come to brown historical signs. Turn right. and go west.
Travel 3.2 miles to a tree on the left where you can “hang ten” from the big limbs. Continue west until you step back in time to the 1850’s. You are now in Nevada’s first settlement; the Town of Genoa. Where the streets crisscross, go north on Main Street until you reach a building where you will hear the ghost of a judge holding court. Park on Fifth Street, on the north side of the building, not in marked parking spaces. You will now begin your walk.
Start by walking behind the museum, then turn left going along the south side of the building to a recessed area where light once entered a jail. Be careful as you climb down the worn steps. There resting on a south facing ledge, you will find your 1st box. Now retrace your steps back to where your car is parked, and head east by foot to Main Street.
Now head south passing several buildings, including one that houses big red trucks. Listen for sirens. Keep going past the dancing deer and the sweetest store on the block. Turn right at the intersection and walk up the street until you come to an old building on the right, where a wedding is likely to be held, so keep your voices to a whisper. Stop, turn left and continue south across the street where you will find a place to rest under a cool tree. Take a moment to climb the monkey bars, or slip down the slide. OK, rest is over. You will now want to go to the west part of the park where it is slightly elevated. Find a cluster of deciduous trees that are not on green grass. Begin looking for the hiding places of birds and squirrels. The best one is on the west side of a tree hidden from view. It’s ‘knot’ easy. There you will find your 2nd box.
Let’s keep on going. You will now retrace your steps leaving the park and walk down to the intersection. Cross the street going east and stop and pay tribute to one of the greatest mail carriers who delivered mail on skis "Snowshoe"Thompson. Enjoy being part of history as you pass a huge stockade where early pioneers once stopped for supplies before heading over the Sierras. On the south side of the museum where the stockade meets the museum, look low for a rock. There will be your 3rd box.
Let's find one more box. Retrace your steps, this time crossing the street going west. When you reach the other side, you will again cross the street going south. Keep walking and you will pass a couple of the oldest buildings in Nevada. Now stop and enjoy the oldest thirst parlor in Nevada. Rumor has it that many a cowboy hitched their horse and went on in for a cold drink. Of course you have to be 21, so don't enter the building if you are too young. Who knows the sheriff might be inside. He would like nothing better than to drag you across the street to the old Town Hall. Are you ready to find that last box? Keep going south, and cross the street. You will see the Trimmer Outpost on your right. Go inside and look for the original mailboxes from the "good old days". Pretty cool, but unfortunately the 4th box isn't there. You will have to go back outside, where you will see old farm equipment. Now really look through all of them, and I think you will find your fourth and final box.
Before you head home, wander around a bit, and enjoy our town. There is so much to see and appreciate. And, thanks for visiting Genoa.
