Fern Wood Letterbox

Prospect Park, Shrewsbury, MA

I checked this letterbox and replaced the notebook and ink pad, (October 16, 2010)

Directions: Take Route 140 north from the center of Shrewsbury. Take the first right onto Prospect Street. The entrance to Prospect Park is a short way down this road on the left. You enter the park through two large stone pillars. This was once the entrance to Juniper Hall, the estate of manufacturer Matthew J. Whittall.

Park your car and take a look at the pictures of the estate especially the one of Juniper Hall. Unfortunately this building has long since been torn down.

Clues: Follow the paved road strait ahead through the metal gates and into the park. You are now walking up the main driveway to the estate. This road at one time led to Juniper Hall. You will pass the entrance to Berry Hill Trail on your left. As you go, look for the metal storm drains that are built into the road. They are at the sides of the road and aren't very big, about 1 1/2 feet by 1 foot. Look carefully because these drains get easily covered with leaves. Make sure you see the metal grate, don't be fooled by pot holes. Follow the road counting the drains only on the right side of the road. Keep on the paved road until you reach the 9th metal grate on the right side of the road. A very short distance past this grate is the entrance to a small trail on the left side of the road. In case you lost count of the grates this is the 1st trail you will see on your left after you pass Berry Hill Trail. This trail is VERY hard to see in the fall and winter. If you can't see the trail, look for a white birch tree about 4 inches in diameter and this will mark the start of the trail. Take this small trail as it enters the woods. Enjoy walking the path among the ferns and look strait ahead and you will see a large boulder. Just before you get to the boulder you will come to another trail. Turn right on this trail and start walking up hill. You will pass a number of large boulders lining the trail on your left. After a short walk you will be able to see the blue town water towers through the trees. Keep an eye out on your left side and look for a cluster of large boulders. These rocks are about 3 feet in diameter. Look for the very first of these boulders that you will pass. It's not the closest to the trail but is a few feet in off the trail. Go to the far side of this boulder and you will see that it has a large horizontal crack. You will find the Fern Wood Lettebox at the base of this boulder near where it meets the boulder next to it, covered with twigs and leaves. Please be sure to replace the box as you found it when you are finished.

There are other letterboxes in this park. I recommend that you find them as well because doing so will give you a complete appreciation of this impressive former estate.

Thank you for visiting the Fern Wood Letterbox. Please let me know if you find that the letterbox is either missing or damaged. Thank you!
