---RETIRED--
Planted on 10-7-06 for the International Plant A Mystery Box Day! at the Vacaville Sherlock Holmes Mystery Box Plant Event.

The great detective Sherlock Holmes and his faithful side-kick, Mr. Watson had come to America to visit their mutual friend WaterDrop. Sherlock Holmes and Mr. Watson were staying at a Bed and Breakfast Inn. They were having a cup of tea when WaterDrop burst through the front door of the Inn in a panic and went straight to the parlor. Sherlock jumped to his feet. What in the world could have caused his little liquefied friend such distress? After catching his breath, WaterDrop told the great detective that he had just noticed that the Lagoon Valley Lake was rapidly losing water. The lake had dropped several feet in a short period of time and was in danger of drying up completely if it continued at the present rate. This lake is the sole water source for the City of Wastealotofwater, which, by the way, was aptly named because the residents of this town were notorious water wasters. Water Drop went on to explain that the wild life living in and around the lake also depended on this water source for survival.

Sherlock Holmes told his little liquefied friend, WaterDrop, not to worry, that he would help solve the mystery. Sherlock asked Mr. Watson to fetch his magnifying glass and a note pad and instructed Mr.Watson to meet him and WaterDrop at the lake.

After giving the instructions to Mr. Watson, Sherlock Holmes and WaterDrop headed out the door and down Basker Street to the lake.

Arriving at the lake, Sherlock understood WaterDrop’s concerns when he saw just how low the water level was. He heard a great sucking sound coming from the water supply line that connected to the town of Wastealotofwater.

Mr. Watson met Sherlock and Water Drop at the edge of the once full lake a few moments later and gave Sherlock the magnifying glass and the note pad. Sherlock Holmes quickly scribbled a few notes on the note pad and then began walking toward the small town of Wastealotofwater with WaterDrop and Mr. Watson following closely behind. As the three investigators approached the small town of Wastealotofwater, Sherlock commented that the small town appeared to be deserted. WaterDrop told him that all of the residents of the town were at a Letterboxing Event at the Lagoon Valley Park and that the residents had no idea that the water level of the lake had receded.

When the three investigators walked into the small town, they immediately heard the sound of running water coming from each and every home and business they passed. Why? After knocking on a door and receiving no answer, they entered the first home and found that every faucet in the little house had been turned on. WaterDrop and Mr. Watson immediately ran through the house and turned off all of the faucets. Sherlock examined a wet shoe print and several small dirty handprints with his magnifying glass. He then went to the next house and found the same “telltale” marks. Sherlock made several more notes in his notebook and then instructed his companions to run to each house and the establishments and turn off the water just as they had done in the first house. As his companions headed off in different directions to turn off all the faucets, Sherlock Holmes then followed a trail of wet footprints to the end of town and a small playground located there. When Water Drop and Mr. Watson caught up to Sherlock he was holding a young, dirty faced boy by the collar. When WaterDrop and Mr. Watson inquired as to why Mr. Holmes was handling the boy in such a rough manner, Sherlock Holmes explained that this was the little culprit that had opened all of the faucets and was the cause of the receding lake.

The young boy was little Billy “Grimey” the son of John and Marsha Squeakyclean. WaterDrop and Mr. Watson asked how Sherlock had determined that little Billy was responsible for turning on all the faucets in the town of Wastealotofwater. Sherlock Holmes responded, “It was really elementary my dear friends. When I examined the foot prints and small dirty handprints in the first home and found the same in the second home I knew the culprit was of an “elementary” age. I then noticed a continuing trail of footprints that led me to this playground. I found young Billy “Grimey” playing here in the dirt. He had snuck away from his parents and the Letterboxing Event and returned to town. When I asked Billy if he had turned all the faucets on he admitted that he had. When I asked him why, he told me that he thought if there was no more water in the lake he would not have to take a bath.

WaterDrop explained to little Billy “Grimey” the importance of water conservation. Billy promised to never waste water again and he would do everything possible to save water. Billy said he could save even more water by volunteering to take only one bath a week, but the trio also lectured Billy on the importance of cleanliness.

The case of the vanishing water is now closed! After delivering little Billy “Grimey” to his parents at the Letterboxing Event Sherlock Holmes, WaterDrop and Mr. Watson took a leisurely walk around the lake and when they came to the corner of Fido’s play area they headed up the steep path ahead to the “lake overlook platform” near the big tree. They stood there watching the water rise in the lake for a few moments. All three commented simultaneously that this was a great location, and a great view of the lake. WaterDrop thanked his friends for their help. As they stood there, Sherlock Holmes glanced down and saw something partially hidden under a rock on the left front side of the platform. What could it be?

This is a moderately high traffic area and people could be approaching from several directions. The box is attached with a swivel hook, unhook the box and stamp in at the table. Re-cover the box with the flat piece of asphalt and place the rock in front. Please place debris around the front. In other words, please “bless” the area.
