The Wright Brothers and The Old Rugged Cross
These boxes are located in Woodland Cemetery in Dayton, Ohio. For directions go to Mapquest and put in 118 Woodland Ave, Dayton, Ohio 45409. Woodland was founded in 1941. It is near the campus of The University of Dayton. It has over 100,000 permanent residents and sits on 200 rolling acres of cemetery land which encompasses the highest spot in Dayton-Lookout Point. If you would like to checkout the cemetery go to woodlandcemetery.org. The cemetery also has some of the oldest and biggest trees in the area. There are many famous people buried here such as the Wright Brothers, Erma Bombeck, Paul Lauerence Dunbar, and many more. When you go through the main entrance, stop at the office and get a map. They have self guided tours if you want to take the time to do a little exploring. Management is aware of the boxes planted there and ask that you respect the cemetery and enjoy your visit. Their hours are from 8:00 A.M. to 7:00 P.M.
After you get your map you can walk or drive across the street. On your left is a bench with two hats on it. These were the hats the Wright Brothers wore. Behind it is a large boulder that weighs 29,000 pounds. This is where Erma Bombeck is buried. There is a marker along the road pointing towards it. Get in your car and go straight.Turn right at the first road and then left at the next road. On the right side just around the corner is my favorite stone. It is called "Dog and the Boy". It is usually surrounded by flowers, baloons, and toys. Curve to the left and pass "Herr". Curve around to the yellow brick road. Go right then another short right. "Lowes" is on the left if you want to stop. Drive uphill and turn left. Stop and park between Benedict and Davis. Walk uphill to visit Orville and Wilbur Wright and their families. Walk to the back of the large Wright monument. Look uphill a little ways to your right and find the Old Rugged Cross. Walk to the cross and pay your respects to IHS Thomason. Facing the cross look back downhill a few paces. There is a large hollowed out tree. What you seek is buried inside under some bark, and woodchips.. Gloves might be good for this one.

After finding the Wright Brothers Box, get back in your car and turn right at the next road. Go straight through the next intersection and on downhill. You'll pass Deweese on your left and turn left at the next road. Go left again, then a very short right around the backside of Goose Island Lake. Don't go out the back gate. You want to go right around the lake. If you want, take some bread and feed the ducks. Keep going, past the "Fidler" on the right and then past three Spruce trees (on the right) all grouped together. Stop and see what John and Gladys "Ware". The Brawleys might be right there to help. There is a two-trunked tree right behind them. Walk around to the back of the tree, it is hollowed out. What you seek is buried there under some sticks and woodchips. Gloves might be good for this one. We've never seen any critters there, but you never know about bugs. If you reach the drinking fountain, you went a little too far just back up a little. Please rehide as well or better than found. Thanks.
I have combined these two boxes to make it easier on everyone looking for them. If you have the time, look around. There are so many famous people buried there.
There is a mystery box within a few blocks of the cemetery. Also Calvary to the Rescue, and Dogwood are within about 2 miles. Hope you enjoyed the hunt and the cemetery. Please let us know if the boxes need attention.
