The second incarnation of this box went missing, too.

This box was recarved and replanted in a slightly different spot within Woodward Nature Reserve, after the box was vandalized in November 2006. And in June 2009 it was planted in a new hiding spot within the nature reserve.

CLUES:

The Woodward Nature Reserve Letterbox is located east of I-71 between Morse Road and Route 161 in Columbus, OH. It’s a magnificent stand of mature trees and protected spring wildflowers—the best trillium drift in the city. The best time to visit is the last week of April and first week of May, when the trilliums are in full flower—a rare treat for Central Ohio.

There are lots of people here, so please use caution and discretion when hunting this letterbox. This area can be muddy, mosquitoey, and fraught with poison ivy! so plan and dress appropriately.

From the intersection of Morse Road and Karl Road, travel northbound on Karl to Fahlender Drive South. Turn left (west) onto Fahlender Drive South, which dead-ends at Fahlender Drive North. Swing left onto Fahlender Drive North, then turn right (northbound) turn onto ILO Drive to Woodward Park. Park your car near the playground.

Follow the paved foot path through the playground and past the tennis courts.

You will come to a bridge. After the bridge you have three choices: a paved path to the right, a dirt path following the stream to the left which is blocked by branches, and a middle path. Take the middle path, up a slight rise. You are on the correct path if you see a 9-trunked tree just off path on the left.

Continue on the path. There are a lot of fallen trees in the area. You will eventually walk under a fallen tree. The path will run parallel to a long fallen tree on the left. The path then jogs a bit to the left (to avoid another large downed tree) and dead ends onto another path.

At this intersection, go to the left 42 steps. You will come to a “Y” surrounded by many cut logs. Take the right-hand fork of the “Y”.

Walk 43 steps to a second “Y”. Again, choose the right fork and continue for 32 steps. To your right, 10 steps from the path, you will see a 15-foot tall stump next to a tall, straight, 2-foot diameter tree. The letterbox is hidden at the base of this tree, on its far side from this path.

Please be sure to re-hide the box well after stamping in!
