Patriotic Tribute

Heading East on Route 138, turn left onto Route 4 and look for a sign naming this stretch of road the Veterans Memorial Highway. (The actual address is 301 So. County Trail, Exeter, Rhode Island.) Continue straight until you come to the Veterans Cemetery.
The Division of Veterans Affairs maintains a dignified and solemn military cemetery
on 265 acres in Exeter, Rhode Island. The cemetery serves as a final resting place for
Rhode Island Veterans who have served their country honorably during wartime and their eligible dependents.
If you are looking for a nice walk, leave your car at the Administrative Building parking area and follow the clues. This can also be done as a quick drive-by.

Uncle Sam Letterbox:

Entering the cemetery, continue on roads to your left that follows the perimeter of the cemetery. Pass the Chapel on your right. Look for Section A5 where you will turn right and look for the “Stone Flame” in memorial of all war veterans. Standing by the flame, look for a big tree that looks like it has a place up high that is just begging for a letterbox. (Unfortunately, that spot was full of water, so your prize is down low. Count 4 large boulders from this tree and take a peek.

Return to the perimeter road and continue your journey. The Cemetery road will soon parallel a dirt road on your left that is not on Cemetery property. Watch for the Woodland Trail created by Master Gardeners of the Class of 2002. The entrance to this trail is guarded by two large rocks. From these rocks, take approximately 24 paces (2 steps to a pace) and look to your right. You should see a rock in front of a tree with many trunks. Look for your treat on the side opposite the rock.
