Make your way to Mohawk park located at the north end of Sheridan Road near the airport. When Sheridan dead ends into 36th street north take a right and go a little ways to the Park entrance on the left.

The Park has a curfew from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m., pets must be on a leash at all times and there is a $2 vehicle charge for entering the park on weekends between April 1 and Oct. 31. There are times when the trails are muddy or even under water and be warned that mosquitoes can be thick in shady areas during May and June along with poison ivy present during the summer months.

***NOTE*** AFTER THE WINTER ICE STORM OF DEC. 07, It appears that all but Oklahoma Pride are missing. I have remade all of them and had them placed temporary at another park for a Winter mini meet, where they were found by the attendees, but I did not have time to replace them at Mohawk park and will attempt to do so on my next trip to Ok. So until you hear otherwise, all but the Oklahoma Pride are missing. Posted 1/6/09 by Safari Man

There are 5 letterboxes in this series, all hand made, all within the confines of the park and all are pretty easy to find, being no more than 1/2 mile, round trip, from the parking areas. The terrain is fairly flat but the trails are not wheel chair accessible nor are bicycles or horses allowed. Please bring a stamp pad, your stamp, pencil or pen, rag for wiping box/hands/brow and bug spray for summer months. Please be discreet when retrieving and replacing letterboxes to maximize their stay in the park. Bystanders have a habit of being curious and like to take home souvenir letterboxes.
And Please reseal all baggies securely to protect the log books from wet and flooding weather!! Now here we go.

GOLDEN DRILLER
Find shelter 2 located just north of the Zoo. Park and walk to the shelter and go around back of it to the creek. Head upstream (left) to the Thrush Gate Trail Bridge and cross the bridge. Follow the trail to the Y and go left. Go a short ways and you will encounter another trail where you will go left again. Go 19 steps and look to the right to the double trunked tree. Your quest is behind that tree under limbs and rocks.

OKLAHOMA PRIDE
Get on Choctaw road and head north east to Shelter 4. Enter the parking circle and park. Go to the western most tree in the circle and take a heading of ~ 005* and go to the eastern end of the fence line. Upon reaching the fence line head westerly along it to the opening in the fence at the trail head. Follow the trail to the bridge on the left and cross over the bridge. Continue straight ahead 115 steps to a small tree with a hole at the base, 3 steps to the right of the path. (note: it is also only 22 steps further to a clearing in the woods) In the hole in the base of this tree you will find sticks and under them is the PRIDE.

PENGUIN ON PARADE
When leaving the parking area of Shelter 4 take a left and proceed straight ahead to the closed gate. At the gate you will find the trail head of the Herb Beattie Trail. Follow this trail until reaching the clearing. At the clearing take a heading of ~ 075* and go ~ 28 steps to a double trunked tree . Behind this tree under a birdhouse find PENGUIN ON PARADE hiding under a rock.

BLACK GOLD
After finding the Penguin on Parade continue northerly on the trail until reaching the overhanging, double trunked tree on the left. From this tree take 105 steps to the ~ 7' high, vine covered stump between you and the lagoon on the left side of the trail. (if you were lucky enough to be here in the summer you might have noticed all the water lilies in bloom in the lagoon just a ways back, along with the Black Eyed Susans and Trumpet vine all along the trail). Back to business........Black Gold is at the base of this stump under a large but light piece of wood and a rock.

NATIONAL PRIDE
Get back on Choctaw Road heading away from the Zoo until you come to the intersection with Cherokee and take a left. Go into Shelter 5 parking area and park near the white closed gate on the left. Go around the gate and find the path heading to your right and get on it. Continue on the trail passing over the bridge spanning the creek/lagoon and on to the clearing. Look to your left and you will see a large rock formation close to the large power pole. National Pride is under the large rock formation under smaller rocks. NOTE: From your parked car location you are just a stones throw from "Stinger", a box placed by Okie Dog (my sisiter).

I hope you enjoyed your hunt for this series of boxes and if time permits, please go to the Oxley Nature Center (north edge of the park) and take the time to search for the boxes located there. The beauty of that area and the stamps makes the trip well worth the time and effort.
