Allie's Duck is missing as of 11/1/06 but will be recarved and relocated soon as Alie's Duck 2.

The duck pond at the Bedford Boys Ranch is a favorite place to feed the ducks, walk around the pond, picnic, or just sit and relax. It also provides the perfect place for a letterbox containing Allie’s duck. The Boys Ranch is located at 2801 Forest Ridge Drive, immediately south of Harwood Road in Bedford.

Bedford Boys Ranch, a home for boys, was established in 1949. It has enjoyed a rich history from its beginnings as a home for boys without parents to its current use as a Bedford Park. In 1938, the ranch, located in Copperas Cove, Texas, began as a day camp for underprivileged boys from Dallas through the Variety Club's generosity. In the mid-1940's, the Variety Club converted the day camp into a home for underprivileged boys. In the early 1950's the ranch moved to Bedford on 229 acres of land purchased from the original City of Bedford. It went through several owners until in 1960 the lack of funding forced it to close. A developer bought the ranch in the 1960's, but his vision for the land did not occur, and the ranch was abandoned. The City of Bedford later bought it to create a city park. From a modest beginning, the Boys Ranch has grown from a day camp to a home for boys to a recreational facility serving a community of approximately 48,000.

The current Bedford Boys Ranch facilities includes 68 acres with swimming pool, small lake, walking/jogging path, youth baseball and soccer fields, volleyball, tennis, shuffleboard and roller hockey courts, picnic tables and pavilions, playground, multi-purpose practice fields, senior citizens center, gym, class and meeting rooms, the Arts Council of NE Tarrant County, and the Trinity Arts Theater.

To find Allie’s duck, enter the Boys Ranch on R. D. Hurt drive off of Forest Ridge Rd. At Doug Rivers Drive, turn right and continue around the park to the stop sign (playground will be on your left) and turn left. Follow the drive toward the lake, past the large pavilion to the parking lot across from the tennis court. From the parking lot, Follow the sidewalk toward the lake and turn left at the intersection with the walk circling the lake, passing the large pavilion and continuing across the wooden bridge to the Memorial Tree Walk. Continue to the next intersection with a water fountain. Look to the right of the Doug Rivers tree for the Fumiko Speares tree. From that tree, go due East about 35 steps to a large natural circle. In the center of this circle, stand on the largest flat stone. Take a compass reading of 100 degrees and go 5 steps toward a stone with a large flat side facing you. In the crevice under this rock you will find Allie’s duck. Take care not to be seen and to reseal the bags and rehide the letterbox carefully, as this park is very well-used!

While you're in the neighborhood, look also for Welcome Home at Colleyville Nature Center and for Puddle-Splasher's Duck, Duck, Goose at Chisholm Park - both are nearby!

Please contact me at blhjrh@aol.com to let me know you’ve found the letterbox and its status. Thanks!
