From the Capital Beltway take Rt. 295 N to Powder Mill Road. Make a right onto PMR and travel approximately 1-1/2 miles to the entrance of the Patuxent Refuge Center, National Wildlife Center. Make a right and follow the road to the Visitor Center. Park on the far left side of the Visitor Center.

From the Baltimore Beltway take Rt. 295 S to Powder Mill Road. Make a left onto PMR and follow the same directions from above to the Visitor Center.

Distance: 1.4 miles
Difficulty: Easy, mostly flat, with some tree roots in trail. Be careful.

BOX #1

Starting at the wildlife trail map board (trail maps are available in the box behind the board), locate the Goose Pond Trail. Follow this trail to the green and brown bleachers. Make a left in front of the bleachers and walk towards the Educational Area sign. From the sign and heading towards the peninsula go 20 paces. On your right there is an unmarked path. Take 25 paces on this path and look for a hollowed out stump on your right. Your treasure lies at the base.

BOX #2

Return to the Goose Pond Trail and head towards the Laurel Trail sign. Take Laurel Trail to the sign "Valley Trail to Cash Lake". Take this trail and go approximately 50 feet. On your left are 3 dead tree stumps of varying sizes. Head towards the fallen tree that is behind the 3rd stump. You will find what you are seeking at the base of the fallen tree.

BOX #3

Continue on Valley Trail passing the disfigured tree at sign post 12. Walk on for another 300 feet to the clump of fallen trees on your left. Stop just past the end of the clump and take an additional 13 paces. Turn right and go 47 paces to "Ole Granddad," the dead tree stump. The box lies under the old fallen tree next to Ole Granddad.

Continue through the woods heading straight for the lake and you will come to Cash Lake Trail. Turn right and follow the path to Goose Pond Trail and bear left and continue to the parking lot. For the adventuresome, you can turn left on Cash Lake Trail and walk around Cash Lake to the parking lot.
